For the first time in a long time, Utah’s placekicking and punting are mediocre. However, we’ve barely even noticed because our offense has been excellent, therefore, we don’t punt very often and now score touchdowns instead of field goals.
It’s weird as a Ute fan to have a very good offense.
I think our poor kicking has actually been a blessing in disguise. We no longer have “guaranteed” points like we had with Gay and Phillips so it forces our offensive play calling to be more aggressive.
We had an amazing offense in the late 1980s. However, our defense back in the day was somewhere below pathetic. Mitchell threw for a then NCAA record 619 yards and the Utes still lost.
But, yes this is a different thing than we have seen in the modern era. I like it!!!
I was careful not to use the word “poor” in my original post because that’s not accurate. I think mediocre still applies here because everything is relative, and compared to what we’re used to, it is very much a downgrade and we’d be upset about it if the offense was like those of years past.
My only point was that we’ve barely even noticed the dropoff in kicking quality due to how good our offense has been.
