Actually, yeah. Both Gach was going to have zero place on this team next year. That’s because of 3 main factors. First, because of the emergence of Alfonso Plummer at the end of the season. He scored 35 points in the Pac-12 Tournament against Oregon State, and had been scoring in the 20-point range for several other games before that. Second, Rylan Jones returning from injury (coupled with Plummer’s emergence) would relegate Gach to the bench, as Both is not a very effective player without the ball in his hands and he wouldn’t have that playing next to Jones. Third, the additions of super freshman Ian Martinez and other new players (such as incoming freshman Pelle Larsson and Brendan Wenzel, who redshirted in 2019-2020) likely would eliminate Gach’s role off the bench. There was simply no place on the team for Gach, and it’s better that he transferred because he’ll likely get playing time at Minnesota. Plus he is from there, which will allow his family to watch him play more. It’s better for both sides, This is Utah’s likely depth chart in 2020-21:
PG: Rylan Jones, Jaxon Brenchley, Pelle Larsson
SG: Ian Martinez, Alfonso Plummer, Jaxon Brenchley
SF: Timmy Allen, Brendan Wenzel
PF: Mikael Jantunen, Riley Battin
C: Branden Carlson, Lahat Thione
If Martinez is as good as everybody is saying he could be, I think he could start as a freshman at the shooting guard spot, which would allow for Utah to bring both Plummer and Brenchley off the bench as shooters. Plus it would be better defensively, as Plummer is only 6-1 and has trouble guarding larger shooting guards. I also forgot about Brendan Wenzel, who redshirted last year. I look for him to get the primary back up minutes behind Timmy Allen @ small forward. Mikael Jantunen is almost certainty going to start at power forward and Branden Carlson will definitely start at center. Riley Battin and Lahat Thione should get all the back up minutes at the PF/C positions.
