I was looking at Troy’s QBR on ESPN and…man…he is terrible.
Out of 125 college QB’s, he is 85.
In the PAC-12, he is dead last…by a large margin.
In comparison, Travis Wilson was almost 20 points better.
Troy has so much potential, and he does so many things well…then we get into the redzone and he becomes a much different player. A terrible QB.
IF he can fix his problems, we win the south. That is how good the rest of our team is. If he can’t fix his problems, we are a 7 win team.
TROY!!! It’s up to you!!!!

He has only played 3-4 Division 1 games. The ceiling is high.

I wouldn’t be overly concerned. The reason his QBR is low is because of correctable mistakes. Without the two end zone INTs, were looking at far different numbers.
Let’s not get lost in metrics. A simple eye test can see that Williams is the FAR better QB than Wilson. In accuracy, throwing mechanism, mid and deep range throws, ability to get out of the pocket. Of course if the INTs continue, then we’ve got a bigger mental decision making problem that is very tough to solve. But honestly, mentioning Wilson at this point is a sky-is-falling type attitude for the QB position.
I don’t know what’s going to actually happen this week, but I see no reason to be anything but optimistic.

I don’t disagree with your comment.
But, if his red zone turnovers continue, what he does the other 80 yards won’t matter. He has to fix those issues or he is a terrible QB.
If he does fix those issues…man, he has SO much potential.

Watching a 50 yrd pass hit the receiver in stride is a thing of beauty. Trying to extend a play he ends up throwing an interception, easy fix…
OLINE- START BLOCKING BETTER…

He needs to learn, and probably has, that this ain’t juco. If the receiver is doubled in the RZ just chuck it into the stands and live to play another down.

Travis Wilson’s QBR also reflected him running the read option in the red zone. They have not asked Troy Williams to do that….yet.
I checked Troy Williams quarterback passer rating (not QBR) and it’s 139.46 and has been climbing. Travis Wilson finished 2015 at 125.43. For comparison, Jon Hays finished 2011 at 132.6 and Jordan Wynn finished 2010 at 139.85. Again, these are purely passer ratings while QBR takes rushing yards into account and they haven’t asked Troy Williams to run.
All that said, for me the jury is still out on Troy Williams due to his interceptions which have mostly been the result of forcing passes into coverage. Also, way too many stalled drives and the failures in the red zone.
Now that it appears that they’ve got the run game sorted out, that takes some of the pressure off Troy Williams to do it with his arm. The run game will open up the pass game. Add in Corey “ankle breaker” Butler Byrd and now it gets a lot more difficult to defend against Utah.

I love your post. Honestly, my ONLY issue with Williams is his INT’s in the redzone. That’s it.
If he doesn’t throw those two INT’s in the end zone, his passer rating shoots up to 144. If, instead of throwing those two INT’s, he throws one TD and we run for another his passer rating goes to 147.9.
THEN, if the refs were worth anything and call the PF on the INT and Utah retains possession of the ball OR they call the late hit on Troy that BYU did on the INT, his passer rating would be 150.
What’s my point? I agree with you, he is a MUCH better passer than Wilson. MUCH BETTER.
BUT, he also has a HUGE flaw, which is the red zone TO’s.
IF he can clean it up, as you’ve shown, we have something really great on our hands.
For reference, in 2008, BJ’s passer rating was 149.

I’m loving Troy Williams so far. He’s made the kind of mistakes you’d expect from a QB who has only played a few D1 games, but he’s also done some things that we haven’t seen in years at the position. The mistakes he’s made are pretty easily correctable too, and the dude is smart. His upside is tremendous imo.
