Looks like he was hit by a car while cycling in St. George. Happened 2 months ago but it’s been kept quiet until going public today. Scary stuff, I have had a few close calls while out on the bike. Watch out for cyclists everybody.

Man that’s terrible.  Another reason why I don’t cycle on roads.

Me too. You can be doing everything right, but the painted white line won’t stop anything and a vehicle will always win that fight.

Met him a few times down here.  He’s a WAY nice guy.  This is sad news and I hope he can recover somehow.

Cities can have safe separated bicycling routes, we just don’t prioritize it.  Call your local city councilor.  This kind of thing hardly happens in lots of countries.

Nevermind. I need to read the story before I post. :/

Even when they do have them cyclist choose to ride on the road. Also without knowing details why do we always assume it is the fault of the car?

Because it is the fault of the car. Legally a bicycle is a vehicle, and when a vehicle hits another vehicle from behind, it’s always the fault of the vehicle that was behind.

Not saying it’s right, but it’s the truth.

There is more than one way for a bicyclist to get hit. I don’t know the details of Shawn Bradley’s accident but bicyclists notoriously blow stop signs and sometimes get broad sided as a result. Or ride down the wrong side of the road and get broad sided because the driver of a vehicle at an intersection was looking the other way at on-coming traffic while there was a wrong way bicyclist approaching from the other side. Eagle mountain is just saying that we don’t know the circumstances so how do we know the car is at fault.

I don’t know the details at all.  I didn’t fault the car.  Great cities simply have more safe opportunities for cyclists.

Actually, the cities already know.  The problem is money.  The costs are high and the participants pay no fees which means small projects.  Our culture is use fees for activities and not much is likely to be collected in fees.  Visit Copenhagen if you love bikes.  They are a priority over cars.  Twice as many bikes and people.  Stop lights allow more time for bikes to pass than cars.  Snow is cleared from bike paths before streets.  Bike paths are off street, paved and have street lights.  It would be much easier to relocate there than hope for sponsors and wait for projects to get done.  It helps that it’s flat country and the bikes preceded cars.

As an aside, for cars and trucks, there are proposals to tax us by the mile for highways and roads fees using GPS rather than the 19.5 cents per gallon tax.  The reason is to spread fees to electric cars.  If we went all electric, we have an unimaginable amount of fees to collect a new way.

If we subsidize bikes, could we also do so for skiing?

        Still, very sad for Shawn.

The reason we should pay for cycling infrastructure is the same reason we should pay for sidewalks without demaning user fees from pedestrians.  Because it makes our cities more livable which is great for everyone.  The more cyclists we have the cleaner our air and healthier our residents and less parking we need to build and more we attract skilled labor looking for great comunities.  All that means we all actually “pay” less by spending a small percentage more or different for cycling.  Cycling infrastructure is relatively inexpensive.  Safe cycling means our kids can reasonably ride their bike to school.

Sad news.  Saw Shawn play Utah in the Hunty then attended their tourney games against Virgina and Arizona.  Seem to remember Shawn setting the record for most blocked shots in a first round game against the Cavaliers.

      Please drive safely out there.

It’s hard to see people who are only 7 1/2 ft tall.

That’s so terrible. I met him once when I was too young to know who he was. Really nice guy.
