…which one would you pick to come to Utah?
Read an article from Steve Bartle today. Couple of names that will be potentially transferring to Utah in the near future. There were 7 of them, 3 WRs and 4 Safties.
WR
Theo Howard: 4 star from OU – 6’0 180lbs
Camron Buckley: 3 star from TAMU – 6’2 194lbs
Marquis Spiker: 4 star from UW – 6’3 200lbs
Safety:
Derrick Tucker: 4 star from TAMU – 6’1 200lbs
Tyreke Johnson: 5 star from OSU – 6’1 191lbs
Tre Webb: 3 star from San Jose State – 6’0 175lbs
Brandon McKinney: 4 star from UW – 6’1 201lbs
I think I would pick Marquis Spiker. He set the high school state record for receiving TDs in California in 2017 with 72, and obviously we need help at receiver.

Could we take them all?
In all seriousness, how many spots do we have to fill? How many do we save for a massive ‘22 recruiting class?
-
CBParticipant
I’m betting our 2022 class will be pretty small relatively speaking. I think Whitt has saved around 2 or 3 spots for potential transfers this year.

The receivers.

Whitt grabs Tyreke Johnson without a doubt. Kid can play kick return, running back, can, safety.

Tyreke is the only one who hails from east of the Mississippi. (FL) I have a feeling we’re likely better placed with the others, all from TX or CA. but you never know.
-
Ute DubParticipant
My response is to, if you could take one of these guys, not who can you actually pull off.

Standing ovation on this post. The links, the info, the organization. Really a top notch contribution. It is obvious you put some time and effort into it. Well done.

Patronizing?
-
Ute DubParticipant
Because it’s a rehash of Bartle’s post on UteZone, right?
-
StoneParticipant
My intent was not to be patronizing. I am sincerely grateful for this type of post. It contains plenty of relevant and interesting information, has links for more information, and is well organized. I love it, truly.
-
Ute DubParticipant
It should be credited to Steve Bartle who’s article and links were used to produce these potential transfers to Utah.

I asked because it sounded patronizing.

Thanks for recognizing that brother. I appreciate it

Great post! I realize we need help at WR but I wouldn’t be able to pass on the chance at getting Tyreke Johnson.

As far as the WRs go, let’s look at some career stats
Theo Howard
Played in 3 seasons at UCLA, 1 at Oklahoma
132 receptions, 1,522 yards, 9 TDsCamron Buckley
Played in 3 seasons at Texas A&M
62 receptions, 877 yards, 4 TDsMarquis Spiker
Played in 1 season at UW (2019)
3 receptions, 67 yards, 0 TDsI guess it depends on what we’re prioritizing. Howard has the most experience, but is the smallest of the three. Spiker has ideal size on the outside, but has basically no experience. Buckley is somewhat of a mix of the two.
I’d be surprised at this point if Howard doesn’t end up here. There’s been smoke around him for a while.
-
DallasParticipant
I’d go with Spiker. I’m more confident someone will step up in the safety position than WR.
Remember what it was like when Carrington joined the team and could catch less than perfect passes? All of a sudden there was a level of confidence in our receivers that I wasn’t used to as a Utah fan. It’d be nice to have that feeling back.

Are we over emphasizing WR talent? As much as I like the talent on this list and as much as I would like to get playmakers like this the ball, if we don’t feature them in our scheme and get them touches how much value can they add?
Using NFL player types, IMO right now Hines Ward is a better fit for our scheme than Antonio Brown. Will bringing in more talent force change in scheme?

Obviously you can’t pass up 5-star talent with Johnson from OSU, but I love what Tre Webb could bring to the table. 5-year guy at San Jose who started for 3 years. Was honorable mention All-Mountain West this last season when San Jose won the league. Pretty sure I read somewhere he received a 6th-round draft grade but decided to pursue 1 year in the big leagues to push that higher. Out of all these targets he’s the one who’s proven the most. Seems like the lowest risk to me.

Bottom line, they’ll be Utes. I will support them whole hardedly.
