I’ve been feeling unusually optimistic about our team this year, especially with the hype around our OL. So I’ve been watching some of the extended highlights from Baylor’s 2019 season. Unfortunately there don’t seem to be many Brewer highlights. I’m bummed to say it but IMO Brewer looks A LOT like a classic Utah QB: mediocre passes, the occasional great pass, some INT, some bad passes that should’ve been INT, and an above average runner.

He looks good in this game.

Bentley 2.0 ….dammit

I only watched the Tech video, but how many QBs have we have that had lead us to victory with 2nd and 15 from our own 1 with 1:15 left in the game?
I’m not saying that he’s going to be a world beater, but the entire offense really relied on him with Baylor and he found a way to win. I’m also not even saying he’s automatically the starter just because he had a great spring….
At the very least, he’s no Bentley 2.0. He’s decent, and I expect he’s going to be surrounded by talent that will allow him to thrive. He was often the lead rusher at Baylor, and I suspect that is not going to be the case at Utah.

Just helpfully pointing out this person has thrown 9000 yards and won a Sugar Bowl. Let him make some mistakes before losing your hope. But it would be Ute fan like to refuse to have some guarded optimism. I don’t think the coaches are thinking next year is the year. It’s this one.

FYI — Baylor LOST the 2020 Sugar Bowl. Georgia beat them 26-14 that year.

DuhwayneParticipant
You’re right, thanks. I look forward to watching him play for us.
Edit: I wonder how his production compares to Slovis. I know it was another team but I like how we look. If we have pass blocking it could be a good year.

Not many Brewer highlights from 2019? Uhh what? The dude threw for 3,161 yards and 21 TDs. He also rushed for 11 TDs that season.

He was the most decorated QB at one of the best HS football programs in Texas. All of our pass catchers raved about him and his ball placement during spring ball. They would only do that if they felt he was a stark contrast to what they had last year. He’s not Bentley 2.0 or even a “typical Utah QB”.

Maybe I have unrealistic expectations (I know I do) but based on those very stats I was expecting to see some consistent high level play in the extended highlights. Instead I saw about 5 interceptions in three games, some bad passes and a whole lot of scrambling.
Before last season I was also surprised by the number of interceptions Bentley had at SC, but nobody wanted to hear it.
In fact, the counterpoint was someone quoting his stats.

Brett Favre averaged 1.1 interceptions per game in his career.
Charlie Brewer has averaged 0.68 interceptions per game in his career.
I am not saying Brewer is the next Favre.Don’t hang a hat on one stat.

He does look good.

Bentley isn’t even comparable to Brewer. We don’t know about Rising either. Utah has an interesting battle going into fall.
Last fall I was 90% certain it would be Rising. This year I am kind of favoring Brewer call it 70%. Hope the cream rises to the top to use a cliche.Stiff competition is what makes great programs great. Utah hasn’t been in this position ever at the QB spot. Whitt has always had a clearly number one guy at QB.
-
krindorParticipant
Here’s the key thing to watch for – Bentley couldn’t beat out Rising for the starting job.
If Brewer can, then Brewer > Rising > Bentley.
And if he can’t…well then, Brewer and Bentley may be similar but Rising is still better than either.
Whatever the situation, we’ll have a better QB situation this year than we did last year.
