This has been the most unpredictable college football season in recent memory. It’s NOT just the Pac12 that has been crazy. Based on my calculation, there are only 24 out of 130 teams still alive for the playoffs (and it’s only the first week of October)! As the playoff history has shown, you can’t have more than 1 loss as a P5 and you must be undefeated as a G5 to even have a chance.
Undefeated P5’s
Georgia
Kentucky
Michigan St
Iowa
Michigan
Wake Forest
Oklahoma St
Oklahoma
1-loss P5’s
Mississippi
Alabama
Notre Dame
Ohio St
Penn St
Pitt
NC st
Boston College
Baylor
Oregon
Arizona St
Undefeated G5’s
Cincy
SMU
San Diego St
UTSA
Coastal Carolina
This could be the season that an undefeated G5 finally cracks this thing. Cincy has to win out convincingly but I think they can do it. It’ll be interesting to see where the playoff committee places them. Keep in mind that a lot of the P5’s that are still alive are still going to cancel themselves out. This also might be the year that a 2-loss P5 gets in. I think it’s going to be a crazy last month and a half.
I love seasons like this. I REALLY love that Bama, Ohio St & Clemson are all outside of the top 3. Kind of a breath of fresh air.

I’d sure like to see some new faces in the playoff.

Good post. Personally, I don’t think Cincy makes it. The powers that be will not want to share the money with a G5 team. As it is, I think it will be Bama, Georgia, OKlahoma and the BIG10 champ unless Oregon can win out. The committee will put Oregon ahead of OSU because of the head to head match-up.
I wonder why this season is so weird. Do you think it has anything to do with last season and the Covid weirdness?-

I think Georgia, OK & the BIG10 champs are in, leaving one spot. I think Georgia gets Alabama in the SEC championship game, which would give Bama 2 losses and eliminate them. That boils down to Oregon (IF they win out) and Cincy. I’d hate to be on the selection committee this year.
I wonder if Covid is having an effect on things as well. I wonder if all of these super-seniors are having a weird effect too. I like seeing this national parity because I think the Pac12 gets a bad rap because of our parity.

Wouldn’t that be great if Bama finally doesn’t make it? I just don’t have faith in the selection committee. If Bama finishes with one loss, they’re in. I hope your scenario comes true.

I think Georgia’s going to take them out in the SEC championship game.
Check out Georgia’s defensive stats:
In 6 games they have allowed:
1 passing TD
1 rushing TD
4 field goals
total of 26 points or 4.3 per game
GOOD LORD.

Great OP Backer! Totally agree, it seems like it’s Georgia and everyone else this year. Their defense is just sick.
The only team I can see beating Georgia this year is Georgia. But if they continue to ball out every week, they’re winning the national championship this year hands down.

Outside of Georgia, let chaos reign! Would love to see the committee have to select between 2 loss teams for the first time. Probably won’t happen but I’d love to see that play out.

That would be great. I’d love to see Georgia lose a few. Leaving the SEC out would be a dream come true. Not gonna happen but I can dream.
