I see only one senior starter, Howard. I know a few guys will likely be moving on, i.e., Lloyd, Kuithe, Covey, Ford. But, we are very young across the board. I hope this season proves to be a good development season for the Utes and next year becomes an amazing year.
We do have a couple of areas IMO where we need some help including RB, WR, and safety. We have Glover coming in at RB. Hopefully, we can find some help in the other areas. I believe that Vele is our future at WR.
By the way, I think Covey may be a Ute next year, but playing a different role as a graduate assistant.

depending on how the rest of this season goes, you will likely see a lot of guys leaving “early.” I think Kuithe, Ford, Tafue, Lloyd, and obviously Howard are gone for sure. I think you may see kincaid and even fotheringham moving on (not sure about those guys, maybe Kincaid wants a chance to be the main guy, maybe Cole wants a chance to get another year of free education). I’m sure we’ll have at least one RB transfer out. Enis might be gone as well if he feels like he is being passed over again. So yeah… I’m assuming we’ll have around 10 guys leave for one reason or another.

Mckinney and Davis are also gone after this year. Not sure what depth chart you are looking at.

LB talent is a huge need. A lot of young guys with unknown potential. All for the heroic walk-on stories showing up. When three of your LBs getting majority of the PT (minus Lloyd) are walk-ons, there’s a recruiting problem and some of the Soph LBs may not be panning out.
Big shoes to fill for Lloyd next year as we will see in the first half of the UCLA game. Still a lot of unknowns with the young three star Reynolds and Frosh Carlton, not sure what happened to the UW Carlton transfer or Mata’afa?
Have to think Swan will be on the hot seat after the next 1-2 years if he does not land a couple higher level recruits at LB and the few guys he has recruited currently last year don’t pan out. Utah’s defense needs higher level talent LBs to compete with the P12 like Hansen, Paul, C.Barton, and Bernard to make tackles while the Dline locks up the Oline.

We need to make getting Lander Barton a priority. There have been rumors that he might be leaning towards not coming to Utah, which would be a huge disappointment. He looks like he could be better than his brothers.

Do you mean Ethan Calvert one of the highest rated recruits Utah has ever landed? Swan is safe.

Whoa. Swan is killing it in recruiting, and it’s laughable to think he might be on the hot seat soon. Utah is recruiting more talent at LB than ever. LB talent is not a huge need. LB development is though…because of youth. There is absolutely NOT a recruiting problem at the LB position. There is just a lot of youth, and a lot of those highly touted LB recruits just haven’t had time to develop yet.
You say that the Soph LBs may not be panning out….but there is only one non-walkon Soph LB: Andrew Mata’afa, who was always viewed as a project that needed to put on weight.
None of the talented LBs that you mentioned (Hansen, Paul, etc.) played signficant minutes as freshmen.
Recapping the ‘big time’ LB recruits:
Ethan Calvert (FR) was not here in the spring, and was injured early against Weber State. Comments from coaches make it sound like a significant injury.
Josh Calvert (RS FR from UW) was also not here in spring, but is listed as the backup to Lloyd. He was injured his RS year and didn’t play at all. Up until this game, he hasn’t played because Lloyd doesn’t sit. I will say that I was surprised he didn’t come in when Lloyed got ejected, and it’ll be interesting to see what happens on Saturday. It’s important to note that all of the LB positions are not interchangeable, and they require different types of players….
Jonah Ellis (FR) was here in spring, and has seen the field and made some plays.
Trey Reynolds (FR) was here in spring, has played every game on special teams, and is listed on the 2 deep behind Furey…who happens to have an extra year in the program so probably has a much better hold on assignments and the mental side of things.
Mason Tufaga (FR) was here in spring, but has not seen the field.
Note that the 4 big time recruits from last year’s class are not COVID freshman. They’re legtitimately true freshman.
Now, let’s look at the walkons:
Hayden Furey (Covid SO): Has been with the program since 2019, saw time on special teams in 2019 and 2020. He’s been with the program almost 2 years longer than Ethan Calvert, so he’s just going to have a better understanding of the defense. Also note that his playing time has decreased since those first 2 games.
Karene Reid (FR): Was awarded a scholarship at Utah State prior to serving a 2 year mission, and is listed as gaining 23 lbs over that time. He was also here in spring. I just wouldn’t consider him your typical walk on.
You mentioned 3 walkons….but I don’t know who the 3rd walkon would be at LB.
TL;DR: We’ll be fine at LB. We’re just really young, and you have to be patient. Our future at the LB position has never been brighter. Let’s hope we can keep Swan around for a long time.

LOL! This post is so bad it’s good.

Utah’s LB position takes a full year with spring to settle in. The COVID year was not enough to get that done. For now, we can be happy for the young LBs to watch Sewell and Lloyd and get ready to see snaps next year. Reid is an anomaly, he is ahead of recent successful LBs for a freshman. Against UCLA we should see 3 LBer sets and Lloyd’s first half replacement will tell us who has made the most progress.

If they’re a COVID JR, it’s fair to assume that means SR and they’ll be gone.
So that leaves us with (loosely) the following returning starters (according to most recent depth chart).
LT: Kump
LG: Bills
C: _____ (Ford likely gone)
RG: Laumea
RT: Daniels
(OL looks good given the youth)TE: _____
(hopeful that we get one of our 3 back, but real chance they all go. Kincaid maybe stays, but this is a weak spot)WR: ______
WR: ______
WR: ______
(seems likely that we lose Howard, Enis, Covey and maybe Dixon. Vele and Parks can take two of these spots, but this is another spot we could use someone stepping up or a transfer)QB: Rising
(set here with good depth)RB: Bernard
(Pledger and/or Curry may move on, but with Bernard, Parks, Glover, we’ve got some real talent/depth here)DE: Van Fillinger
DE: ________
(will likely lose Tafua, but Xavier Carlton should be ready to step in)DT: Junior Tafuna
DT: ________
(potential to lose Devin Kaufusi, someone will have to step up here)LB: _______
LB: _______
LB: Hayden Furey
(losing Lloyd and Sewell will really hurt here; Reid has gotten some play though and hopefully Calvert or someone can fill the other spot)CB: Faybian Marks
CB: Clark Phillips III
CB: Malone Mataele
(lots of talent and youth here, plus we’re getting JaTravis Broughton back – not currently listed as a starter, but was prior to injury)S: __________
S: __________
(losing both Davis and McKinney here, but solid backups in Latu and Bishop who should be ready to step in) -

tavion is a sophmore. we are set at rb with him. Money parks and vele can hold down the wr, though we need to find another dynamic slot guy
