What an incredibly challenging year this has been for the team. As I’ve thought about everything and the exciting wins we’ve been experiencing, I was again reminded at how unbelievably spoiled we are to have Whitt and our tremendous coaching staff. Ludwig deserves all the credit in the world. He’s the PERFECT complement to Whitt’s style and philosophy. How quick and easily we forget the days of the revolving door that churned out 10 OCs in 10 years or something crazy like that. Contrast that with the offensive product Ludwig is putting out on the field each week and it’s just an awesome sight to behold!

UCLA paid through the nose to bring in Chip Kelly and he’s gone 15-25 so far. And by failing to win the South this year, they might consider parting ways or at the very least putting him on a very hot seat for next year.

Same with ASU. The results of the Herm Edwards era have been a step backward from Todd Graham. Add in the scandal and he’s likely shown the door and hitting the reset button yet again.

Arizona has been a dumpster fire going from Rich Rod to Sumlin and now to Jedd Fisch. Similar instability at Colorado and their program has been down for years.

USC hasn’t been able to find the right coach since Pete Carroll left which was 12 years ago. And now Washington is a mess since Petersen decided to leave. Jimmy Lake appears to be in over his head.

And this is just within the PAC 12. There’s so many other examples of top programs across the country experiencing substandard results due to poor coaching. We are so fortunate to have the stability and longevity of Whitt and staff who have led the program to a steady rise YoY. None of us fans are ever content and want to see our team make the CFP and win an outright National Championship. But having a very competitive program with the potential to enter that conversation on any given “special season” is a FAR better place to be than what most are experiencing….Go Utes!!

Some fans are focused on their own team and a desire to win it all and fail to process how difficult football success is, how hard it is to remain in the race deep into the season, season after season. We are now in a league, each team with resources we could only imagine a decade ago, that is very competitive. Even blue bloods like USC, Washington and Oregon find it very difficult to repeat when getting to the top of the league. Progress does not simply come from willingness to slap leather and buy the best coaching. If you compare Utah’s entry into the Pac to Az and ASU or others back in the day or TCU or others recently, you have to conclude that Utah has done a masterful job of coming out of the mid majors to compete at the top level.
