We listen to pressers, radio interviews, and pregame shows hoping to better understand what the coach is thinking.  We all know that our coach and every other coach is talking in coach-speak.  I understand why they do what they do.  However, wouldn’t it be enlightening to hear how the coach really feels.  We could hear things like:

Their corners are garbage and we intend to exploit them all night long.

Their offensive coordinator is an idiot and doesn’t know how to stop a blitz, so we will blitz virtually every play.

Our safeties are just not very good.  I hope the opposition doesn’t throw over the top.

They have the worst defense in the conference.  We should score 50 points tonight.

I hate their coaching staff and we intend to beat the crap out of these guys.

We, of course, will never hear the whole story.  But, it would be interesting if we did.

I liked it when Jeff Jonas was doing the color for Utah basketball games in the 90s.  He simply said it like it was.  I remember a pregame show when we were playing Weber State.  He said, “Let’s be honest Bill, we should kill these guys.  Every one of their players would rather be playing for Utah but they are not good enough…”

Cristobal was praising our special teams in his presser yesterday. LOL

Yeah, I heard that.  What a joke.  I would like to know what he really feels.

KWs response to the blocked punt was clever as well. He said basically one guy missed his block. Watching the clip again, there were three UofA dudes in good position to block the punt.  It’s kind of been that way all year. Not sure I would even have the punter suit up for the rest of the season :). IF the Utes have to punt on Saturday, I’m going to use that time to go get another beer and not watch.

        That’s just ridiculous.

Yesterday’s interview with Whitt was a complete waste of 20 minutes.  The ONLY reason to tune into that interview is to find out about injuries, but he stated that he will no longer discuss injuries through the remainder of the season.  We should put Whitt in charge of our national security… I’d feel really comfortable.  Don’t get me wrong, I love Whitt and “In Whitt I Trust”, but his interviews are brutal.

I’m having WAY more fun listening to Covey’s segment on Riley.

IIRC, KW is contractually obligated, like all HCs to go through the motions with these media encounters if they want their media bonus check. Clearly his tone and non-verbal message indicates he would rather lay on a bed of nails.

KW knows the media is paid to do their job and having done this show for so many years he responds irreverently to all the stupid questions. The Utah media is so predictable in their questioning. PK and DJ will ask their back handed, BYU fueled questions with the smart ass tone. Newman, Bartle and a few of the others will lob up all their soft-layup Utah questions.

My impression is KW respects Riley, Mitchell, Sly and any other previous Utah football players in the interviews. Like any job, one of the duties you have to do whether you like it or not. From an out of state perspective the local coverage Utah football has now is amazing. Go Utes!

That’s a great point, Trailgoat.  If I had to deal with some of the local “sportswriters” (I wish they made quotation marks BIGGER), I would probably give interviews just like Whitt does.  I think it was that kind of thing that caused Bronco to jump ship.

Love Jeff Jonas, is he still around the program at all?

My claim to fame is that he and I went to the same grade school, high school and college, though separated by several years.

Some questions are more insightful than the answers. For example, the question about their OLine TFL allow rate makes me believe that standard pressure packages aren’t going to work and our DBs better be on their game.

Of course Cristobal’s answer was pure fluff.

Anyone who’s ever managed people knows that the quickest way to lose their buy-in is to throw them under the bus publicly (whether it’s deserved or not). If I were coach, I would do press conferences exactly the way Whit does. Praise specifically, criticize generally.

Oh, I don’t blame Whitt one bit for how he handles those.  My point, I guess, is why have them?  They’re a waste of time.  I guess they give the local media hacks something to do.

Coach and player press conference quotes make for lazy journalism.  How about a thoughtful interview once in a while?  Or . . . I dunno . . . some game analysis?

I don’t know, man.  That’s a lot to ask.  Hell, the members of UteHub go into deeper analysis than most of the media outlets.

Mike Leach tends to be pretty honest.
