Seems weird to me that Utah had never landed one 5 star recruit. Programs like Bama and Georgia have an embarrassment of riches. Don’t get me wrong I love our program and how we develop talent just seems odd that we have never landed a 5 star kid. I wonder how prevalent this sort of thing is?

I have to wonder how hard our recruiters pursue them knowing that in all likelihood they’re going to end up signing with blue bloods.

Unfortunately there are only about 30 5* recruits out there for each class. These kids rarely go to a non blue blood program. The exceptions being kids that want to stay home to be play for their hometown school.
With that said, I think our only shot at getting a 5* recruit is if he’s a local kid and we are able to win the battle to keep him home. The state of Utah rarely has a 5* rated kid in a given year. The most recent kids we had a shot at (going off of 24/7 ratings since I believe these are considered to be the most accurate) are Penei Sewell, Noah Sewell, and I think Kingsley Sumataia got bumped up to 5* but not sure. And these kids all ended up choosing the big flashy brand name Oregon over Utah. It should eventually happen but I don’t see us having a shot unless it’s a local kid that wants to stay home or has grown up wanting to be a Ute or comes from a legacy family.

Jaxon Dart was 5* > USC, a blue blood. Lots of people mad that we didn’t really recruit him. Well, it was apparent to the coaches that he wanted to leave town. That’s that.

People keep saying this, but Rivals and 247 both had him a 4*. There were a few fridge services that perhaps had him a 5*, but even with group sourced wikipedia, he was 4*.

Does it matter?

Yes, facts matter. And in a discussion about 5* recruits, calling a 4* a 5* matters.

Its probably going to get harder now with NIL. Texas has a deal paying OL $100k/year now.
Also the #1 player in the country committed to Jackson State. https://247sports.com/Player/Travis-Hunter-46084728/

The #2 overall recruit in this class (5*, obviously) just flipped his commit from Florida State to…Jackson State. That’s Deion Sanders’ FCS program.
First 5* to ever go to a FCS school.
A SIGNING DAY STUNNER!
Top-ranked CB Travis Hunter, ESPN's No. 2 overall player in the class of 2022, has announced on Instagram he will decommit from Florida State and sign with Jackson State and head coach Deion Sanders. pic.twitter.com/rZPVeKcvIr

But will he look good in a light blue jacket? And how does he feel about peking ducks?

I seriously wonder if he is doing these kids a disservice. He has good coaches on staff but that big of a step down in competition can really cost these kids money in the long term. Their tape immediately becomes suspect because they are not competing against top flight competiton weekly (if ever). Sanders is the adult here who has seen it all. He seems to have an affirmative duty to these kids and their families.
Not sure how I feel about it.

At his signing ceremony, Hunter had three baseball caps on the table in front of him as he prepared to make his announcement: Florida State, Auburn and Georgia.
He tossed them off the stage one-by-one and unzipped his sweatshirt to reveal a T-shirt that read “Believe.” He then caught a Jackson State cap — with a dark blue J on a white background — that was tossed to him from the crowd and put that on.
“Historically Black Colleges and Universities have a rich history in football,” Hunter said in his post. “I want to be part of that history, and more, I want to be part of that future. I am making this decision so that I can light the way for others to follow, make it a little easier for the next player to recognize that HBCUs may be everything you want and more.”
