The Utes were 9.5 point underdogs against Alabama. Yes, not many thought we had a chance.
But the Utes were 16 point favorites against Pitt. I can’t recall anyone thinking that we would lose that game. All the talking heads were picking Utah to win.
Pitt was the participation trophy for the 2004 season. At the time, I felt like they allowed Utah into the BCS so that none of the real teams would have to play a 7-4 Pitt team that won a crappy Big East.
They also avoided having Utah prove a non-BCS team belonged because we didn’t get to play a real opponent. They should have given us undefeated Auburn. That would have been a game!
