Artemis countdown is being held, but not the Utes… #5 Tao Johnson and Caine Savage
Tao Johnson, Freshman WR, 6-0 184
Tao is a true freshman from Thunder Ridge HS in Idaho Falls, Idaho. An all-around athlete, Tao played QB, DE, punter, forward in basketball, and also was the 5A state champion in 100 meter dash (10.82), and 5A third in the 4×100 relay and long-jump. Tao was projected to go as a DB or WR, so the Utes have him slotted as WR. Depth chart released today shows him as #2 at the R-WR role, which is a bit surprising for a true freshman who didn’t play WR in HS. He must be good!
Caine has been playing for the Utes since 2020, but game day action has been primarily on special teams. In 2021 he logged 3 special teams tackles while appearing in 9 games. Previosly he was at Western HS in Anaheim, California, where he played CB, WR, and kick returner, and as a senior he logged 17 tackles, 5 INTs (50 return yds, 1 TD) , a forced fumble and a blocked kick. On ohfense he had 2,040 all-purpose yards that included 96 catches for 1,464 receiving yards (15.3 ypc) and 14 receiving TDs, 41 carries for 338 rushing yards (8.2 ypc) and 3 kick returns for 188 yards (62.7 ypr), 2 for TDs. He had set Orange County records in Junior year with 124 receptions, 2103 receiving yards and 32 receiving TDs. For those efforts he was twice named First Team All-Orange County as well as receiving other CIF accolades both in junior and senior years. For 2022 I expect we will see more action from Caine on special teams and at the CB position.
