We have had inconsistencies in the offense each week.  We have corrected some, but then new ones pop up.  For example, we were bad in the red zone against ASU but did great against OSU.  Definitely had running problems last week that we din not have previously.  He hopes it all comes together this week.

Believes Tavion Thomas is ready to deliver this week.  This will help Cam in the play-action passing game.

He was asked if the RB room can deliver like last year.  Ludwig said yes they can.  Feels like Bernard is a great RB to mix things up.

Bill asked about Jackson.  He said that he has some natural RB skills and his size is good.  He is good at pass protection because of his experience at QB.  He understands pass protection.  Feels like he has a bright future at RB if he decides to stay there.

We all have to step up to fill Kuithe’s void.  The offense was built around Kuithe and Kincaid.  The backup TEs and WRs have to step up.

Dixon loves football.  Works hard in practice and deserves to be targeted.  He is a real threat.

McClain is progressing very well.  It is a big move to go from WR to TE.  He is a viable weapon for us.  Expects him to be a key player next season when he has more experience under his belt.

UCLA’s defense plays a different structure than in previous years.  They do a good job of pressuring the QB.  We need our running game to be successful this week to keep the pressure off of Cam.

Cam does a great job of managing the offense.  At half-time, they told Cam that they would start passing nearly every play because the running game wasn’t working.  Cam responded and did a great job.

He said KW loves the QBR score where Cam is 6th in the nation.

What I took away from the interview

Ludwig wanted to run last week and they couldn’t do it successfully.  So, they moved to the passing game, and Cam and the receivers delivered. It seems that Ludwig really believes that we need a successful running game tomorrow because we need to keep the pressure off Cam.  He seems optimistic about Tavion and the other backs being able to deliver.  I suspect we will try hard early to get the running game unleashed.  I hope it works.  I really think we need to score early.

I hope Tavion runs like a man possessed tomorrow. Tavoion running like a man possessed tomorrow can’t possibly mean anything good for our team.

Some entertaining coach speak as it should be. Sure, Utah would love to get the running game going. Utah has a RB and to and extent a run block problem right now. What is going to be different in seven days? TT had 6 carries for 13 yards against OSU (credit to OSU’s defense too) and 11 carries for 60 yards against ASU. Last three games a total of 132 yards.

Huge fan of TT and you hate to see a kid struggle with whatever he’s going through. Props to KW and the team hanging in with him. D1 football is a mental and physical grind. I hope all the best for TT getting things worked out. If TT is not starting and stuggles against UCLA, at what point does this become a distraction for the team?

No way Ludwig is going to give Bernard 20+ runs a game. He’s too valuable of a player to lose at this point with Curry out. Glover wants to be the guy, but he clearly has a way to go. Guessing UCLA plays Utah straight up to start on the run and cover Utah receivers 1v1 tight in the first ten yards like most athletic teams have success doing. Both teams have yet to play offenses like they will see tomorrow. Utes stick to what they do playing as a complete team, Utes win. Very interested to see how Utah’s defense takes care of business against DTR and Charbonot (sp).

Not sure what you mean when you say “both teams have yet to play offenses like they will see tomorrow”. UW features a multiple attack with lots of play action, formation shifts, double tight end sets. UCLA won’t throw anything at Utah that they haven’t already seen from Florida, ASU or Oregon State.

For the most part, unless a team is running the triple-option or Air Raid, the schemes don’t really change from week to week. The quality of the players running them does, as does the sequencing of the calls. But you are going to see RPO, zone read, 90’s.,, week after week. The ability of any D to confuse the other team as well as their effectiveness at stopping the other team from doing whatever they want is what determines the winner/loser. The only thing that has changed in that respect from the 70’s, 80’s or 90’s is that everyone isn’t running some form of the power I or veer.
