Pessimistic we were going into the CCG. Been diving into some numbers today. Penn State is really good. They might be the best team we have played this year, and their defense is legitimately top 10, maybe top 5 in the country. I will do a full analysis post some point in the next week.
They did get smacked by Michigan, but they were right there with Ohio State, leading in the fourth, until 2 turnovers balooned the MOV. Lost the TO battle 4-0. Honestly crazy they only lost by 13. They have pretty much shut down every other team they have played. We have not faced a defense near this good all year, and their offense is well above average.
This is going to be a hell of a fight. Cant wait.

They are the best defense we have faced this year. OSU is probably the best we have faced to date. As far as their offense goes – the two USC games, UCLA and Oregon have better offenses. Arizona and OSU are not far behind IMO.
We will need a good offensive game plan to move the ball consistently IMO.
It should be a fun game.

Also need to mention that their schedule outside of Ohio State and Michigan is extremely weak.

I’ve been watching a few game highlights with my completely uneducated football fan eyes. Their D line and LBs are legit. They are fast and get in the backfield quickly. Our O-line will have their work cut out for them. Their 2 RBs (both freshman) are really good. QB is above average with a TON of expereience. He’s a 6th year senior. Pressure won’t rattle him. Not a giant threat to take off like Richardson or Williams but will run if needed. You can count on a few QB runs a game but no need for a full time spy. He’s not going to make a ton of mistakes but I’ve seen a few throws get away from him when he’s forcing it. Their kicker can hit from 50+. They seem to have heart. Not like SC where they’ll quit once they are punched in the mouth. It won’t look good for the Pac-12 Champs to lose to the 3rd place B1G team.
I think the biggest factor will be pressure on their QB. We didn’t hit Stroud once last year. Hopefully with a healthy secondary we can get some coverage sacks and pressure. Kincade, Vele and Money will have to show out. JQJ will have to get another 100 yard game. It’s going to be hard against the best defense we’ve faced all season.

Their best win was opening week against Purdue…..Not the strongest resume in terms of the teams they’ve beaten….Not a ranked opponent among those defeated.
Solid team for certain, but we need to keep things in perspective.

PSU’s best defender, CB Joey Porter Jr., has opted out of the Rose Bowl. So far, the Utes have zero opt-outs for the game.

I saw posted on a Penn State forum that Porter recently had an appendectomy and that might have played a part in his decision to opt out.

Utes pull a no show in the 1at quarter with blown coverages and listless defense most of the first half like they did against USC, Franklin is too good of coach to let Utah recover. Utes lose if they play a 1st half like most of their games including the CCG. PSU goes as does their QB. Clifford is not a run threat at all so one thing Utah does not need to worry about. Utes should be able to slow the run game and crank up the pressure on Clifford. Big quetion is what can Utah’s offense do against PSU’s stout defense.
