We had a bunch of statements in the past few weeks from presidents, media, etc, implying that a TV deal was imminent. Now we’re being told it’s still months away and that Scheer hack is reporting AZ and CO meeting with B12. Reputable guys like Mandel also saying that no deal is expected soon and Yormark has met with AZ and CO. Did something fall through that pushed it back again? Why was Harlan giving B12 media the middle finger on twitter if the future is still so uncertain?

I can’t say much, but the family of a long time Pahrump radio personality is in talks to purchase the Pac-12.

It’s simple: The Big 12 sucks. That’s it. Look, no matter what happens with the PAC-12, in 2029 every Big 12 team will be looking to jump somewhere else. We are a LONG ways from this being resolved.
In 2029/2030 we will see another big shift. Either the sport will consolidate into two conferences and a minor league will be created or Texas, Oklahoma, USC and UCLA will decide that they don’t like their new conferences and they will go to the PAC and/or create a new conference. So, come 2030 we will have a P2, P3 or P4 and the Big 12 won’t be a part of it.
My guess is that USC and UCLA go back to the PAC and the ACC dissolves and Texas and Oklahoma create a new conference with some of the ACC teams.
What does that have to do with anything? There is no rush. What the PAC-10 will do is piece together a tv deal. Apple TV will get a game or two a week. ESPN will get a game or two a week. Amazon will take a game or two.
Most of the PAC games will be on Thursday, Friday or Saturday nights. The three to four networks will come up with a way to pick their game each week and they will pay accordingly. Then there will be another deal with someone like the CW to carry the rest of the games. So you will have a situation where each network picks a game a day and whatever is left over will be on the CW.
The final deal will be within the area of the Big 12 deal. It will be a dollar more or a little less, but close enough.
The simple reality is the Big 12 sucks and every P10 team is trying anything to avoid the Big 12 because they know if they join, they will just be leaving in ~2030 and that makes no sense to leave the money of the California research.
That this is dragging on so long shows you how much P10 schools are desperately trying to not go to the Big 12. Remember, if the Big 12 was attractive, teams would have joined already. Instead the Big 12 added 4 bad G5 teams. Teams with no history, no recruiting, no chance to move up in their state.

Ted LassoParticipant
I mean…the B12 must not be that bad because they are getting about the same valuation as the P12. If we’re being honest, the P12, B12, and ACC all suck compared to the B10 and SEC. No way USC, UCLA, OU, or Texas are ever leaving their respective conferences unless they are getting the same payout.
-
UtahParticipant
First, if it didn’t suck, Utah, AZ, ASU, Colorado would all be in it. They obviously don’t want to go.
Second, money is a part of the equation. Does Texas want 100 million in the SEC, as the fourth or fifth best football team or do they want 60-75 million in their own conference where they win it every year?
Same with USC. They get their money, but then they have to travel, which costs a ton of that money. Then they have to play in cold weather. And right now, USC is the clear #4 team, behind Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State. Will USC be ok with that?
And UCLA? Will they be happy as a team that struggles to make a bowl game? UCLA is a part of the UC school system, which doesn’t look at football the same way that the south does. Will UCLA be ok there?
I dunno. Maybe. Maybe not.
Like I said, either the SEC and B1G will scoop up some ACC teams and maybe some PAC teams and form a minor league, which is ok, because then college football will go back to being college football for everyone else, or those four leave and do their own thing and we go back to a P4. What will Texas and USC think watching Utah in the playoff while they sit at home and get ready for a bowl game?
But none of that has anything to do with the simple fact that if Utah wanted to be in the Big 12, they’d be in the Big 12. They don’t want to be there.

Ted LassoParticipant
I honestly think the B12 and P12 are pretty comparable when it comes to suckness. You can also say the reverse and ask why there aren’t any B12 teams willing to leave and why the P12 is looking to add SDSU and SMU. If the P12 was really the superior conference, they would have no problem adding B12 schools. There just aren’t any financial incentives for teams to join either conference right now.
-
YergensenParticipant
Wake up. This thing is already headed to P2 Tier 1 leaving us all out. Big 12 sucks mentality is so small and shortsighted. We need to start seeing ACC and B12 as potential allies instead of competition. Had we taken B12 teams 2 years ago we would be in a much better place. An ACC or B12 merger may be the only way to get a 3rd seat at the table and even then probably not enough. These expansions with G5 teams only grow the divide and build out the second tier.
-
RickParticipant
I am not sure about the whole USC is #4 in the Big 10. Wisconsin and Nebraska both got significant coaching and recruiting upgrades and Michigan State and Purdue are right there as well. Maybe this upcoming season they would be 4th but they are losing a ton of talent before they jump. UCLA on the otherhand are deep doo doo!

The only people who have made this an URGENT item to wrap up ASAP seem to be impatient fans and media with an ax to grind against the PAC12 or to shed a better image on the Big12.
There really is no reason that this HAS to be wrapped up ASAP.
From what I’ve heard the past couple of days, it’s progressing well and looking good (in terms of keeping the 10 teams together, getting a good price, at least as good if not better than what the B12 got and for availability).

The future
Modeled on world soccer
For teams that want to be in nation wide league.
Top 10 teams in league 1
Next 10 league 2 etc for the teams that want to be in that system. Other leagues, PAC, Mt West, Ivy League that want to exist do so. In top league bottom teams move down each year and top teams move up.

AZUTEParticipant
Relax the Pac12 will be just fine. The only reason it looks like the conference tv deal is lagging is because Yormack jumped the gun and took the first deal on the table to set the market and likely left money on the table.
The pac is right on schedule with tv negotiations. If it streaming heavy that will take time to get the negotiations and contracts worked out as it’s new to everyone.
Yomack has engaged in an obvious smear campaign against the Pac12 in an effort to promote his conference. It’s childish and a terrible business tactic.
The pac will come in around 30-33 million a year per team and they won’t be on the The CW or hallmark channels.
-
utefansince79Participant
Utah is simply better off playing in all sports with teams along the west coast, and in the neighboring states of Colorado and Arizona than traveling as far as Florida, Ohio, and West Virginia.
Hope the remaining PAC teams can stay together. But time will tell.
-
Ghost of the HEBParticipant
Agreed, but if the neighboring AZ and CO schools bounce, that’s a problem. So the fact their presidents are meeting elsewhere is concerning
-
D TParticipant
I have yet to see credible evidence that any of those schools are meeting or having conversations with the XII.
-
Ghost of the HEBParticipant
The Athletic (Stewart Mandel) posted a story yesterday reporting Yormark met with president of Az and CU
-
D TParticipant
What’s his source? I’ve seen a lot of rumored meetings/conversations but no evidence of concrete sources.
I put Mandel in the same category as Dodd at this point.
-
Ghost of the HEBParticipant
Dodd is a B12 propagandist. Mandel doesn’t have an agenda.
-
D TParticipant
You didn’t answer my question….What was his source amid all this misinformation in the air?
This contradicts every report coming out of our conference’s leaders I’ve seen…..As far as I’m concerned, Mandel has joined Dodd absent verifiable evidence.

I would bet my house Taylor Randall has had conversations with Yormark too. Doesn’t mean anything.
