As I thought about my All-Ute football team – some positions seem obvious like QB. Others like corner back and safety are very difficult because there are so many to choose from. For example – I left Phillips off the list because I think the other three were better players. The two offensive tackles were also no-brainers IMO. Here is my team:
Quarterback – Alex Smith
Running Backs – Zach Moss, Jamal Anderson
Wide Receivers – Roy Jefferson, Steve Smith, Kevin Dyson, Brittain Covey
Tight Ends – Brandt Kuithe, Dalton Kincaid
Offensive Line – Jordon Gross, Garrett Bolles, Lance Scott, Zane Beadles, Chris Kemoeatu
Defensive Line – Steve Clark, Star Lotulelei, Luther Ellis, Paul Kruger
Linebackers – Devin Lloyd, Koa Misi, Chase Hansen
Corner Backs – Jaylon Johnson, Eric Rowe, Norm Thompson
Safeties – Eric Weddle, Marcus Williams, Julion Blackmon (I did not add Larry Wilson to the list because he became a great safety in the NFL, not in college.)
Punter – Marv Bateman
Kicker – Louie Sakoda (tough call)
Return specialist – Reggie Dunn
This is of course is all subjective. I think the positions where there may be the biggest arguments are Dline and Linebackers. There are other running backs who were great, but I went with the two I thought were the best. -

I would take Automatic Andy over Sakoda. More range.

Im taking Gay over both Andy and Sakoda.

I think this is a great list, but I’d consider Stevenson Sylvester and Cody Barton at linebacker and Scott Mitchell at QB too…

Both guys were great LBs at Utah. Tough call. But, I think Barton may have only been a full-time starter for one year. Sylvester was great and had a good pro career.

The question is: Is this Utah team supposed to compete at the next level or in college? I don’t think those two teams are the same team and if the answer is college then my only regret about picking Chase Hansen would be that I couldn’t pick him 3 times. He was a game changer. Best I’ve watched in that position for Utah in my time as a fan and that’s saying something with Sylvester, Barton, Misi, and Lloyd all being in my time.

And on the point of whether it’s for college or the next level, if it’s for college I’m strongly considering Hunter Dimick. That dude got it done.

Marv Bateman was better than two Ray Guy winners?
-
CharlieParticipant
Marv was before all these position awards and was in a tier by himself.

ProudUteParticipant
The short answer is YES. I believe he averaged 48 yards per punt in the early 70s. On top of that, he still holds the record for the longest field goal in Utah football history. I was at a game where he had a 90-yard punt. Utah was at its 10. Bateman kicked from the endzone and it went into the other endzone. It wasn’t all in the air, but still an amazing kick.

Dang I had no idea.

I personally think that Britain covey is the best return specialist in Utah history, but we all have our own opinions

Central Coast UteParticipant
I don’t remember Marv Bateman. Was he really better than Hackett or Wishnowski?
-
RoboUteParticipant
Great picks.
I’m taking Covey over Reggie Dunn as the return specialist and if that disqualifies covey from the recievers then I’m slotting in Tim Patrick.
Punter is wishnowsky.
Kicker is Automatic Andy
I genuinely have no idea who Norm Thompson is so I’ll take your word that he good enough to have edged out Clark Phillips III and Sean Smith. I would take Clark over both JJ and Rowe. No one ever torched Phillips or Smith like Pittman and N’keal Harry torched JJ.
And finally my most controversial pick. I would drop Zach for Ty Jordan. What I saw from that young man was stunning. We’ll never know what could’ve been, there’s a 10000 reasons a prospect may not end up to be the force of nature Zach Moss was as a Senior, And I don’t take that for granted. But Freshman to Freshman, Jordan was better. RIP man.

ProudUteParticipant
Ty Jordan had the potential to be our best RB. Sad loss.
Norm Thompson was an All American when Utah didn’t have All Americans and he was a first round pick in the NFL draft. So, yes he was one of Utah’s best corner backs and a great return guy too.

Jamal at running back over Booker or Eddie is a problem for me. I think your O-Line is spot on. TEs are correct. D-Line is pretty good but I think there are several better than Steve Clark. Linebackers, I would put Jared Norris on there over Chase. Corners must have Clark Phillips. Safeties are solid. Marv is solid. I would take Matt Gay for kicerk. All in all a very good list.
