Saw this as well. Sounds like he could be added back to the practice squad and who knows after that. Same thing happened to him last year and he eventually made the roster. He has been hurt most of the pre-season which probably didn’t help.

Hope he gets another chance, but at the same time, hopefully Whitt is keeping his coaching seat warm.

Love Covey. And wish him the best. Hope he makes a squad. If not, not many dudes in this world can say that they started in a Super Bowl.

Hard to carry a return-specialist on the 53-man roster. May be part of gaming the NFL roster system. He’ll probably be re-signed to practice squad and then moved to active roster once someone gets hurt and moved to IR.

This pleases me (only if it means he gets to coach for us sooner).

Ok, here is what is going on:

1 – Covey got released. He can technically sign with anyone.

BUT, what the Eagles want is this:

You have a 53 man roster. And you have a practice squad. Every Sunday (gameday) you can take two practice squad players and dress them and they can play for you. After you do this 3 (or 4, I don’t remember) times, you have to sign them to the 53 man roster.

So, for the Eagles to have flexibility (they need to trade Barnett, add a LB and possibly Taylor from Indy), they will sign Covey to the Practice Squad, then elevate him on game day for at least 3-4 weeks. By then, hopefully they have their other roster stuff figured out and can add him to the 53 man roster.

He’s probably not going anywhere. NOW, any other team can claim him off the practice squad but they have to add him to the 53 man roster, and frankly, a small WR who can’t get off the line and is a PR only…that’s a tough sell.

But he will most likely be Philly’s PR this year.
