I appreciate what Barnes has done, I’m not piling on him. However, as I was watching the game today I kept thinking about saves.

Rose Bowl (1) – Barnes scores a TD to tie it but doesn’t end up winning the game.
Rose Bowl (2) – Barnes scores a TD, however isn’t good enough to get the win.
WSU – Barnes gets the win.
Florida – Barnes started, however wasn’t the main QB throughout the game, I give both credit for the win.

NJ – Lead the comeback win against Baylor. Barnes wasn’t going to pull that out. NJ brought the juice.

I appreciate Barnes, but NJ is the best option for the future.

I think that last drive solidified NJ, it was the separation the coaches were looking for .. I hope it gives him and the coaches the confidence going forward

You give the next opportunity to Nate. If Nate isn’t getting the job done, you move on to the next guy, whether that is Barnes or someone else.

in a perfect world, there isn’t a next opportunity. Rising knocks the rust off next week while both Johnson and Barnes get meaningful reps. Johnson will still have packages throughout the season and if they can keep Rising upright, Johnson will continue to get experience without having to carry the team.

2024 will sort itself out but for this year the two QB system isn’t working. Week 1 at least they let them have their own drives. The debacle this week was largely the product of changing them out every couple of plays and following the tendency from the Florida game of only running when Johnson was in and mainly throwing when Barnes was. It wasn’t until they stuck with one and broke tendency that things turned around.
