OSU gave up 400 yards passing to WSU. We need to throw the ball to win. Glovers 2 yards and a cloud of dust won’t get it done this week. JJ might be able to get 4 yards and a cloud of dust.NJ will see a stacked box and need to make quick reads and get the ball out quick.
We have struggled against them in the past at their place. My hope is Cam will play. No point in waiting 2 more weeks if he is ready now. If NJ plays take the reins off and see what he can do. Tough decisions for the coaches this week and from here on out. I’m rooting for all the above. Old cliches one game at a time and just win baby!

I miss the days when OSU was a gimme game.
-
Jim VanderhoofParticipant
I hear you. These are the kind of games that have haunted us in the past.
-
D TParticipant
We’re 3-1 in Corvallis over the last 4, so we don’t struggle as much as you suggest.
That said, I expect another defensive struggle IF CR isn’t able to go, but a U victory for certain if he can…..Otherwise, they could beat us for sure.

2014: (9-4) Utah 29 – (5-7) Oregon State 23
2016: (9-4) Utah 19 – (4-8) Oregon State 14
2019: (11-3) Utah 52 – (5-7) Oregon State 7
2021: (10-4) Utah 34 – (7-6) Oregon State 42Struggle doesn’t always mean lose.

Jim VanderhoofParticipant
They beat us last time we played in Corvallis. They were down after the Gary Anderson debacle for a couple years. Similar styles. Should be a good battle. Cams experience playing in that environment would help🤞
-
D TParticipant
One game doesn’t equate to struggling, particularly with how competitive that game was.
But I agree, we stand a significantly better shot to win Friday if CR’s available…..Like you said, he’s experienced playing there & knows what to expect…..Fingers crossed.

My concern is this…a worse Oregon State team beat a better Utah team with a healthy Cam Rising in 2021. Every game is its own microcosm but that alone should give anyone pause.
-
SalUteopiaParticipant
Their otherwise average QB (Nolan?) had a pretty good game in 2021. He connected on a couple deep passes that made a huge difference. I think their RB also rushed for 150+ yards. I’m not too worried about DJU, but he has the capacity to make some good throws. I’m more worried about Martinez and Fenwick, but our D should be up for the challenge. I think we’ll need to score at least 24-28 points. Is our O up for that?
-
22Ute22Participant
Ehh, I don’t make much of that game. Their QB had a really good game that day, and we were the wrong type of special on special teams.

UtahParticipant
If Cam plays, we win big.
If Johnson plays, it’s another 14-7 game.
Oregon St is so overrated.
-
Jim VanderhoofParticipant
OSU will come out ready to play. They will be licking their chops for a fumble or two from NJ. We need to protect the ball and don’t get behind. I agree with Sal we need to score 24-28 to win or more.
Is a 75 yard touchdown pass to start the game asking too much?
-
chinngiskhaanParticipant
If we score 28 points we will 100% win this game.
-
Central Coast UteParticipant
The problem is Utah hasn’t scored 28 points in a game yet

22Ute22Participant
The good thing is that OSU’s pass rush (or entire D-line for that matter) is nowhere near the level of UCLA’s or Florida. Their secondary is also very inexperienced and just meh. I don’t think their secondary is terrible in terms of coverage. Ward is just a magician and WSU has good WR’s. However, the tackling of their secondary is horrendous. Hard to believe they fix that in 1 short week. Should be an interesting game, but I think we should win. They had a good O-line, but we have a good front 7. Their WR’s are also nowhere near as good as UCLA’s.
-
homerParticipant
I’ll get slammed for writing this. I think both of OSU primary RBs are better than Utah’s. Especially a banged up JJ.
-
22Ute22Participant
Anyone who would downvote this is nothing but a homer. Martinez and Fenwick are absolutely better RB’s than anyone we have. I think JJ can be on the same tier, or even higher than them, but he hasn’t shown it this year since he’s hurt. Also doesn’t help that teams aren’t afraid of our passing game and we have gone up against two really good D-lines in UF and UCLA. We are also missing Bernard really bad. Good runner, great pass protector, and has elite RB hands. It’s such a shame what happened to our RB room. We never got to see a 100% healthy JJ, Bernard, and then Curry not getting back to 100%.
-
Central Coast UteParticipant
There’s no way you’re getting slammed for that. OSU’s run is top-notch. Utah’s has struggled a bit but has also had some bright spots. I’d give OSU the nod there for sure.

Jim VanderhoofParticipant
OSU will run at our D ends and try to wear them down. Fano and Ellis are a bit under sized. Their RB’s are big and run physical. Hopefully we get Van and Otoole back for some depth.
Our QB struggles to throw downfield (or maybe it’s the coaching staff that struggles). Our RBs Glover and now Vincent are undersized. We need JJ and Cam to win this game. I wish I was as confident as some on this board. I’ve guess I’ve seen enough negatives to be 100% positive. I hope I’m wrong.
-
MFuryParticipant
I’m not an expert, but to my untrained eye…
If anyone watches UCLA and then chooses to run at the D ends (especially Ellis) vs attacking our secondary (plenty of blown coverage), they are crazy or masochistic.
-
SalUteopiaParticipant
@Jim, I agree that a win is not a given. Obviously CR/NJ factor is huge, but no full-strength JJ and no Becker are equally big factors. We will have to make this a D battle.

The Miami UteParticipant
I think the easiest path to winning this game is taking away Oregon State’s running game and forcing DJU to beat you. Nothing against the guy, but I just don’t think that he’s an exceptional QB. Yes, he’s got some tools and looks the part but I’ve seen nothing from him that tells me he can carry a team and win a game single-handedly. I think that if he’s forced to pass and pass often, the Utes’ D can get to him and force him to make bad decisions. That can lead to turnovers and a shortened field, giving our limited offense a better chance to put up points on the board. Whatever the case, even if we win don’t look for a work of art. I’m guessing it won’t be far off from the three victories so far this season versus P5 adversaries.
-
SalUteopiaParticipant
True, DJU has potential, but he won’t beat us with his arm. If we can contain Martinez / Fenwick (tall ask), we got this!
-
The Miami UteParticipant
I’m not sure it’s that tall of an ask to contain Fenwick/Martinez given the quality of our Front 7. Both of UCLA’s RBs were running wild coming into last weekend’s game and got completely shut down. I’m also not completely sold on the competence of Oregon State’s OL. I personally believe that stopping the run is going to be a priority for Utah because Scalley probably doesn’t believe that DJU can elevate his game under pressure and beat Utah.
-
SalUteopiaParticipant
Martinez is more proven, but if we keep him/Fenwick below 100, we will have done a good job. DJU folds under pressure; I have confidence we will get to him.
-
CharlieParticipant
Miami is right with the defensive strategy. Utah is capable of stopping their run game and if forced to pass OSU will be at disadvantage. Our defense is their concern. Utah needs to find a rhythm to keep the ball moving, the movement should be better than last week especially if it is a necessity. As Utah returns players to the field, issues mount for our opponent. I am looking for a couple of notable returns.

Jim VanderhoofParticipant
Ucla played right in to our defense by passing from the pocket. Our D ends Ellis and Fano are extremely quick and hard to pass block.
OSU is a power run first offense. UCLA didn’t have a power running attack. We havent faced a team with power running game (supposed to be Baylor strength). We also haven’t faced a scrambling out of the pocket QB.
OSU qb is either really good or really bad. That’s why he left Clemson. Let’s hope we see the bad!
-
The Miami UteParticipant
Not sure if you follow them, but both of UCLA’s RBs (Harden and Steele) are big power backs (both over 6 feet and well over 200 lbs). They were also both averaging over 8 yards a carry before playing Utah. UCLA tried to run but just couldn’t because Utah didn’t let them. Also, DJU is not a scrambling, out of the pocket QB. Yes, he can run if required but it’s not his main strength. In that way, he’s really similar to Moore in the way he plays. Just look a his career rushing stats, they’re pretty mediocre: 297 rushes for 1012 yards/3.4 average.
-
22Ute22Participant
Baylor did do a lot of power runs, so it’s not like we haven’t seen it. They did have success in the 1st half, but once adjustments were made at halftime, they got shut down.

Sorry bud no custom orders, ‘fraid all I’ve got is three inside runs and punt.
