I was hoping for more from our offense but did not really expect it. What really disappointed me was how our secondary showed little or no improvement over last year. They were beat downfield consistently and are again the weak link in an otherwise decent defense.

Secondary is just fine. The “beats” that you’re talking about are man coverage and they’re forcing great routes, throws, and catches and limiting run after catch. That’s what you want in the defense and Scally will take those any day. Giving up 21 points to a team that has been putting up big numbers and without getting any help at all from the offense is solid.

Broughton had a rough day. He was abused all game. His coverage wasn’t great either. That open field tackle miss on third down was probably the largest mistake by the defense all game.

I don’t know. They ran right at Reid on their first drive and he kept picking the wrong gap. Ritchie certainly got burned. And whoever had Silas Bolden on their 4th down TD.,,

In a game like that, it’s easy to look at the failures but there were very few of them. Holding a team to 100 yards under their per game average and 13 points under (FBS games only) means you were doing pretty damned good. No one stops everything and the misses were magnified by the lackluster offense.

If this game was played with Utah having its full complement of players, the scoreline would have been similar to last year’s. Holding a team playing at home to 21 points and 350 yards total offense is usually a recipe for success.

And if the offense could’ve done more, been on the field longer, the D would’ve been even better.
