I was overall pleased with our win yesterday. Here are my thoughts:

      The Good

      – The score
      – Tag team running backs of Jackson and Vaki. (I am very impressed with Vaki.)
      – Our rushing defense was once again stellar. We held a very good running team to 69 yards.
      – Forced two turnovers.
      – 5 Sacks
      – I think Barnes may be a better runner (not faster) than Johnson.

      The Bad

      – Our passing offense still lacks a lot.
      – Too many of their receivers were left wide open.

      The Ugly

      – Vele caught the tipped pass. Should have been overturned.
      – The targeting call on Bishop was bogus.

This game was a huge improvement from the OSU game. I was pleased that Ludwig was a bit more creative. The defense remains very good.

      Great positive synopsis. Agree

I thought the Bishop call was atrocious as well until I became more knowledgeable about targeting rules. It is different when a player is defenseless so even though he didn’t hit him with the crown of the helmet it was still targeting. I think it’s a lame rule though.

I think the appeal will fail.

However, I do not believe there was an indicator of targeting, and thus there should be no targeting call. Specifically, there was no launch that was BOTH forward and upward. Also, the only other potential indicator of targeting that seems relevant (Leading with helmet, shoulder, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area) seems to require intent (“to attack with forcible contact”), and does not penalize whether forcible contact occurred. From the replay, it is pretty clear that Cole was not targeting the head/neck and that any contact was incidental.
