TCU ran a five man front when they were in the MWC. USC runs a five man front.
What a five man front is a hybrid between a 4-3 and 3-4. You have the three down linemen or tackles and then the two outside ends/LB’ers.
In our case, I think the 5 man front allows us to incorporate some 3-4 plays into the playbook while taking advantage of the glut of DL we recruit.
For example, Pita T is a OLB on the next level. If he makes it, it will be as a OLB in a 3-4 scheme.
Had we been able to sub him out more and keep him fresher, he would have been a terror as the end in a five man front. Especially with players like Mokofisi and his versatility. Imagine if Fitts had not been hurt. Pita T, Mokofisi, Lowell, Pasini and Fitts would have been unreal.
Next year, assuming Lowell stays, having Anae, Fotu, Lowell, Mokofisi and Fitts with Tonga, Tupai, etc backing them up? Wow. Unreal.
Then toss in LB’ers of Luafatasaga and Hansen with Taoteoli and Thompson and Hamilton backing them up? Yes. Sir.
We do have questions at DB, but we have some really good recruits coming in as well. And Smith has moved to CB already. And if Marcus comes back…Holy Shee-UTE.
Then, if Bolles comes back, we will have Bolles, Uhatafa, Falemaka, and Barton returning. Along with Moss, Shyne and Henry-Cole (rumors are McCormick may retire). We’d return Fakailoatonga and Handley at TE. At reciever we have Siosi Wilson, Singleton who really improved through the season. We have some good young guys coming into the program.
