Rising turned down some big NIL offers to come back to Utah.

after the recent decision by the Utah legislature (?, i forget the entity that the DNews went to) that public schools had to publish NIL contracts, even though the contracts are not with the schools, those figures are now public record.

The speculation is double but the base is known. I assume the speculation comes from something Rising’s camp said

wouldn’t work. how can you legislate what a kid can make off his own NIL? That genie is never going back in the bottle.

The only way I could see even slowing it down would be to go backwards on the transfer rules which I wouldn’t support unless they put the coaches under the same rules. If a coach can actively seek employment elsewhere while still under contract, why should a player – in football and men’s basketball only – be held to a different standard?

Edit: thought some more about it and I suppose that if they decided to make athletes employees instead of students, more control could be available. Otherwise, in my opinion only, student athletes should have the same freedom to change schools as any other student. If Stanford finds out that a Utah Biology student is doing some great work in the lab and wants to offer a better deal for them to change schools, none of us would hold it against them. It shouldn’t be any different just because a football player is someone we are interested in watching on Saturday’s.
