Joel Klatt’s ideas to fix the transfer portal

Joel Klatt broke down possible fixes to the issues in college football such as the calendar and the transfer portal. He suggested to fix the calendar to separate the transfer portal window and recruiting out of high school for better decisions to be made. Then, Joel discussed why he believes there should only be two ways to transfer instead of three ways.

Thanks Miami for the post. He makes some great points. Sad that we have got to this point. Money is driving the bus.

Lot of smooth brains in those YouTube comments.

One time transfer rule violates antitrust. You literally limit their ability to make money off of their name, image and likeness.

Limiting the way kids transfer? Yet a coach can sign a deal and leave you stuck for two years? So Caleb Williams can’t leave with LR? Same point limits antitrust and their ability to make money off of their name, image and likeness.

As far as it being better for the player? Yeah I guess so. The ncaa and universities hid behind that same logic for years. We know better. Let us make money off of your bodies but you have to eat ramen noodles. If your dad dies a coach and mentor can’t buy you dinner.

Nah f**k the ncaa. Other humans saying they think they know better than you are not always going to do things for your benefit. Eventually it always benefits the arbiter of these rules makers more.

Klatt is wrong. Also doesn’t understand the 9-0 Supreme Court ruling.

College athletes need to move to semi professional level.

I’ve said in the past that what’s going to happen is that scholarships/NIL are going to be like contracts. You want to come to USC? Fine, sign here on this contract that commits you to four years. Oh, you don’t want to do that? Fine…good luck finding better terms somewhere else.

As long as the school and NCAA has zero say I am 100% behind that. If the kid signs his name with the agent writing these deals.

I know major companies like Dr Pepper and Wendy’s are making these contracts up with the kids. Caleb Williams doesn’t need usc at all though. Olivia Dunne doesn’t need LSU. So Klatt doesn’t even account for those kids. To some degree Rising needs Utah. Sure needed Utah last season to convince all of the sponsors he would play by Florida.

Caleb Williams could sign a deal with any blue blood and still be with DP or Wendy’s.

Klatt is oversimplifying the issue. Because the vast majority of these deals don’t compare to the KW types in college athletics.

Eagle, I disagree with you but only in a certain sense. Does Caleb Williams specifically need USC? Probably not, but he does need a platform to develop his brand and gain notoriety. I also think that it helps him quite a bit that he’s in the media capital of the universe. I’m not 100 percent certain that he’d be receiving the same level and type of endorsements if he had stayed at Oklahoma.

I agree but CW has established himself enough that he could leave to a better situation if he chooses. USC fans know this and better hope he just goes professional.

Even Deion Sanders said these deals now would have made him second guess his decision on leaving school.

My point was to illustrate that not all college athletes are equal. Ward was getting next to nothing at Wazzu and is staring at 2 million dollars now.

I think it is overall the best result despite it ultimately sucking for my favorite team the Utes.

He’s going to depart the largest media market in the country and get a better deal somewhere else? Where? I can’t think of any school in the nation that has deeper pockets and could offer him more unless you’re talking about Stanford and the Ivys and they surely don’t play that geme. Fact is, from my view, that Williams played his hand as well as could be played and soaked every cent possible from his college experience. I do think that he’d got it so good at USC that there’s a slight possibility that he stays one more year, though that’s not likely.

One other thing. His comments on the Collective Bargaining Agreement? Who is the union the NCAA? You want to create a union that will be full of Blue blood types, G5, mid level, doormat universities, FCS schools then across all sports? Across male and female?

What presumptive level of intellect do you have to be at to think a CBA would simplify the whole mess of the NCAA?

Just what we need. Lawyers and judges screwing up college sports. Maybe congress can help. Good luck with that. The only solution is stop watching and the market will correct itself. Rehabilitation for sports addiction is the only solution. I admit I’m an addict. Some SA (sports addiction ) meeting might get me off the couch so I miss a few games!

Maybe I’ll start a chain of SA centers and make millions. Then I can get on the money band wagon with the networks.

You can do it Jim…I used to be a huge baseball fan growing up all the way to about three years ago. They made a few changes that p**sed me off and I swore them off. At first it was hard but, with time, baseball became irrelevant in my life and I haven’t watched a game in years. I occasionally catch highlights of games on YouTube but that’s as far as I go. Same thing with the NBA…I don’t even watch highlights any more…it just doesn’t interest me…

Im with you Miami. I was a huge baseball fan. The strike ended it for me. I don’t watch anymore. I quit going to Utah basketball because of style of play. I watch fewer Jazz and NBA games.

I now coach my grandsons baseball and basketball teams. I get the most enjoyment in teaching kids how to play the sports I grew up loving.

I saw a recent Jazz score on KSL?
            50 point loss. 147-97.

I mean the fact that 147 points scored tells you all you need to know about the NBA.
