I grew up during the hay days of TSPP Football. And being a Utah fan, I never followed football and focused strictly on MBB. And whenever TSPP fans tried rubbing football in our faces, we didn’t engage and instead said we didn’t care about football because Utah was a “basketball school”.
Fast forward 40 years and my goodness how the tables have turned! Never thought I’d see the day where the delusional Y fans would start to favor MBB and begin telling themselves they’re a “basketball school”. Oh how sweet it is to start to see maybe the beginning of a new trend down South! And it’s not just the below thread but the overwhelming threads on ClownBoard are about MBB at a time where they would typically be in nominating themselves pre-season national champions…

Their fans don’t want to be a basketball school. They love the improvements going on with basketball, but they know football is king and don’t want to accept their reality.
BYU and reality = oil and water.

Small correction…”essential oil” and water.

They WANT to be a basketball school and are putting resources to try to be, but aren’t yet. Utah has a more recent NCAA tourney win than them… Who knows if this gamble pays off – The new coach could suck donkey balls as an NCAA HC (Remember Boylen was very highly regarded as an NBA asst.)

Currently this has little to do with what the Y fans want. Right now they have a wealthy benefactor and Ryan Smith’s interest is BB and we should just expect to see him buy the way into being national. Money is one of the key ingredients but it is not the whole package. Time will tell. Goodness knows if his interest will spill over into football. Right now he has his mouth full with the Jazz and is still eating. Each year that goes by and the Jazz are not making a challenge in the NBA playoffs, his other interest will likely go up and down. For now, enjoy your football season.

We’re just numbing the pain for what we know will be a very mediocre to awful football season. Kalani, as much as I love him, is not the guy. Unfortunately, we will wait another two seasons before we fire him. On top of that, our rival will likely win the B12 this season, in their first season in the leauge. I know Cougarboard tries to pretend like it won’t happen, but most BYU fans I talk to think it will and fear it. We know the football season will be bad for us record-wise, and probably having you guys win the conference will make it doubly painful.
On the other hand, we’re excited for what our basketball team is shaping up to be next year with a new coach and some good recruits. We were also crushed when Pope left to Kentucky and it seemed like all the momentum he had built had just collapsed. Now it looks to potentially be even better. Also, B12 basketball is probably the best basketball conference in the country, so it’s exciting that we have a shot at being competitive there.
Most BYU fans I talk to wish so badly that we were better at football and would gladly sacrifice any success on the basketball court for success in football, especially because we all know that it is what drives everything. But alas, we are where we are in football, so we’re clinging to basketball for now.

And just like that, all my hate for BYU fans goes right out the window. You’re one helluva guy Jim McMahon!
The honest truth is if the majority of Y fans were like you, I’d root for BYU in every game except against Utah. But for every dude like yourself I encounter, I come across 1000 d-bags that leads me to want to watch the Y campus burn to the ground haha! And I’m sure there’s a huge population of Y fans that feel the exact same way about Utah fans based on their encounters with Utah fans.Anyway, thanks for coming on here and always being such a great guy.

Both fanbases sadly have lots of idiots. But by and large, most fans are good, normal people. As with everything else, it’s the vocal losers online who ruin it for the rest of us.
I’ve mentioned before that I have a family member who played for Ron McBride back in the day and he’s awesome. We cheer for each other when our teams aren’t playing each other. I hate how toxic the rivalry has gotten. I know that rivalries will always have some animosity (which is part of what makes them great), but it’s gotten too personal and ugly.
I’m excited to have us in the same conference again-even if it’s only for a few years before another shakeup. I hope it leads to some classic games and better fan behavior on both sides. It really is one of the best rivalries in the nation at a time where so many rivalries are just being tossed aside.
Our only hope this season is that by some miracle we beat you when we play and ruin your chance of winning the B12, because we don’t have a prayer to win it ourselves haha.

I fear Ryan Smith Enterprises is going to funnel NIL truckloads to both BYU basketball and football. Much harder to do with football, but that guy prints money.

Until Kalani is gone and somebody more capable is in charge, I fear it won’t matter how much money is pumped into BYU football. I love Kalani and wanted him to succeed so badly, but he just isn’t the guys to get it done. Fire him and give me Jay Hill.
