247 does their best to “deflate” the rankings to account for class size. The highest rated recruit in any class gets full weighting and each subsequent recruit gets a decreasing % of their value.

So if the 10th highest rated recruit for Alabama and the top rated recruit for Utah were both 91’s, Utah’s recruit would contribute more to Utah’s total than Alabama’s would.

They used to have their formula linked but it may be behind a pay wall now.

They have the right idea to not just do average – but agree they put too much weight on class size.

Here’s the argument against pure average.
Team A signs 4 recruits; two 92s, a 91, and an 88
Team B signs 3 recruits; all of them are 91s

If we look just at the top 3 recruits from both schools, A has a 91.7 average and B a 91 average. But because A signed another still good-quality recruit, their average drops to 90.7…putting them behind Team B.

The other reality is that top players matter more. Getting an 89 and an 80 is (generally) better than getting two 84.5 types – especially in the portal era where a P4 team can basically fill in their team with 85s if they want.
