Every message board needs one of these on-going threads.
The title is self-explanatory: If you’re listening to music right now, what are you listening to? It’s kinda cool to see what everybody’s into, sample new stuff, listen to your favorites, and have silly arguments.

Post links or just tell us what is getting you through the day.

Steven Wilson’s latest album “Hand. Cannot. Erase.” is pretty darn cool.

The whole album is cool, really. Here’s a playlist of it.

Woa @leftyjace you have been elevated to super cool in my book. Steven Wilson is my favorite artist, plus his band Porcupine Tree is perhaps the best prog rock band ever. Just went to his show here in November and even flew to NYC a couple of years ago to see him. One of the best musicians/writers of the last 10 years.

Tony @admin, I was there too! WHAT A SHOW!!!! It was amazing!
I’ve been a fan of Porcupine Tree for years and years. As a musician, the amount of respect I have for Steven Wilson is hard to describe. He’s freakin’ amazing.
I will be traveling to see him again when he comes across the pond in the future. Perhaps we plan a road trip!

Tony ( @admin), are you a fan of Katatonia?

Yes. I dig “white euro” metal and prog rock bands.

Katatonia is coming on April 10th to the Complex!

My tickets are already bought! 🙂

I’m more of a death, folk/viking, and doom metal guy myself, but a few recommendations for “white euro” and prog that I dig:

              – Voyager (probably my favorite “prog” band)
              – Scale the Summit
              – Epica
              – Gloryhammer (a parody power metal band that just happens to write amazing songs)
              – Cynic
              – Ghost
              – Kamelot
              – Dragonforce

I saw Katatonia on last year’s 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise, and they were fantastic. I’ll be headed on the 2017 cruise in less than a month…can’t wait!

Back on topic, currently listening to Amon Amarth – Where is Your God?

@skinyute I’m listening to a few of your recommendations now. That metal cruise has many bands I like. Ever listen to Devil Driver? Mike the guitar player is a buddy of mine.

On the heavier end of things I dig Opeth, Sevendust, Lamb of God, Meshuggah… Then of course there’s old school metal, Priest, Iron Maiden, Rat Salad (black sabbath)…

@Tony: I’ve tried a few Devil Driver songs, but they’re not really my thing. The music isn’t bad, but the vocals are way too rap-rock’ish for my tastes. I might catch them on the cruise though…I tend to see lots of bands I never would otherwise. Will be sure to tell them UteHub Tony says hi, lol.

@lefty: I learned long ago never to judge a metal band by their looks. 🙂 Some of the most amazing voices come out of the most unexpected people (exhibit A: Aaron Stainthorpe from My Dying Bride, one of my favorites)

I posted my personal “Top 20” albums for 2016 on another site yesterday, may as well list it here too. Might give y’all a few new things to check out.

Album of the year: Anaal Nathrakh – The Whole of the Law. This is sheer insanity and anger put to music. As one review said, this album doesn’t just punch you in the face, it punches *through* your face and keeps going. A brutal, intense, amazing and exhausting listen from start to finish.

The rest of the top 20
                  2. Witherscape – The Northern Sanctuary (honestly, this one is a very close second. More like 1a)
                  3. David Bowie – Blackstar
                  4. Khemmis – Hunted (amazing stoner/doom)
                  5. Goatpsalm – Downstream (ambient/trance/black metal hybrid)
                  6. Vainaja – Verenvelaja (brutal doom)
                  7. The Vision Bleak – The Unknown (goth)
                  8. Ihsahn – Arktis (avant-garde craziness)
                  9. Fleshgod Apocalypse – King (symphonic metal)
                  10. Oak Pantheon – In Pieces (folk metal)
                  11. Thy Catafalque – Meta (avant-garde)
                  12. Allegaeon – Proponent for Sentience (tech death)
                  13. Deathspell Omega – The Synarchy of Molten Bones (f**king insanity)
                  14. Saor – Guardians (Scottish folk metal)
                  15. Nails – You Will Never Be One of Us (hardcore/crust)
                  16. Uada – Devoid of Light (black metal)
                  17. Draconian – Sovran (doom)
                  18. Myrkur – Mausoleum (amazing vocal performance)
                  19. Youth Code – Commitment to Complications (industrial)
                  20. Sentient Horror – Ungodly Forms (death)

Song of the year: Witherscape – Marionette.
                  2. Fleshgod Apocalypse – The Fool
                  3. Anaal Nathrakh – Hold Your Children Close and Pray For Oblivion
                  4. David Bowie – Lazarus
                  5. Ihsahn – Frail.

Disappointment of the year: Tie between Gojira’s Magma and Opeth’s Sorceress. Both had a couple really good songs, but overall were just so…boring.

I really love Opeth, except for the cookie monster vocals. That’s the thing I just can’t stand about metal is those kinds of vocal tracks.

                @admin, @skinyute, I gotta ask…

Were you surprised at how Katatonia LOOKS as compared to their music?

Their image just doesn’t match their sound. They’re not metal. They’re not death metal. They’re just… ambience music. It’s his voice.

I just don’t understand their image.

@admin Tony, give me some song suggestions for No-Man and Blackfield, would you?

Some of my favorite Porcupine Tree songs are Sound of Muzak, Glass Arm Shattering, Lazarus, etc. so that should give you an idea of the style of Steven Wilson’s stuff I like – though I like it all, I guess…. ha!

@leftyjace my fav Porcupine Tree songs include every last one of them. Top of the list though, Time Flies, Blackest Eyes, Trains.

Blackfield tunes I really dig: Waving, Glass House, Christenings

No Man: Heaven Taste (steve wilson mix). Lots of their tunes are kind of good mood-background type stuff.

Have you checked out David Maxim Micic yet? UNREAL guitar player.

Also, unlike another Ute fan site, the SEARCH HERE WORKS so you could search for the question too!

In short, post the tweet or video URL in the text area. Done. Just make sure it is on its own line.

This list won’t be complete without somebody who actually went to school at the U. I had a few classes with Ryan Raddon back in the day and knew him (somewhat) because he worked at Mechanized Records (anybody remember that place?) and when he started DJing at Manhattan. Humble beginnings for somebody who ended up a $250k/night DJ and playing in front of a enormous crowds at outdoor venues.

Anyway, here are a few of his songs that I like.
