Here is a selection of game-by-game points given up by our opponents this season:
      – Baylor vs P4 opponents: 23, 38, 34, 43
      – USU vs FBS opponents: 48, 38, 45, 62
      – OKState vs P4 opponents: 31, 22, 42, 38
      – Arizona vs FBS opponents: 39, 31, 10, 28
Theme here? The lowest number in each of the lines is what Utah put up against them. Our offense has simply been inept at scoring points and we’re in danger of this season’s wheels coming off it’s not significantly improved by Friday.

It’s weird we seem to have some problems when you look at things like numbers or even just our team playing. But what I’m being told very frequently on this board is that no one’s responsible. Oh well, guess we’re stuck.

Part of the problem is time of possession.. I don’t have the numbers in front of me , just what I’ve noticed.. our time of possession seems to doubles the other teams, we just don’t put up any points up on our drives. We need more creativity and less predictability down in the red zone , plain and simple.

It’s true, it’s an impressive stat. I think it’s due both to our team’s style of play and our defense’s ability. Even though they’re not the best we’ve had I feel that they’re doing well overall.

I should have read what you wrote before I replied. You hit the nail on the head. I have little to no hope that the coaching staff will change their approach.

Three words: time of possession. With Rising out the best strategy, as deemed by the coaching staff, is to win by suffocating the opponent by simply not letting them have the ball. It works really well if, and only if, we put the ball in the endzone at a high rate. We did not do that against Arizona if we would have then we would have won. We had the ball in the red zone often enough but terrible (emphasis on terrible) play calling lead to 2 turn overs on downs and 0 points and one was a field goal.

In short our coaching staff has let us and the team down by having a poor game plan since Rising’s injury.

If there was anything to learn from the 2023 season, it was that Utah needed to figure out a way to still be a good offense without Cam Rising — whether he was coming back or not. But here we are in the same spot again. There’s too much offensive talent on this team to be struggling so much with scoring against not good defenses.

I really think it is the stubbornness of Ludwig and Whitt at this point.
