Here’s where Utah and ASU rank nationally in various statistical categories:

      Scoring Offense
      Utah: 71
      ASU: 37

      Scoring Defense
      Utah: 15
      ASU: 69

      Passing Offense
      Utah: 64
      ASU: 90

      Passing Defense
      Utah: 26
      ASU: 74

      Rushing Offense
      Utah: 49
      ASU: 18

      Rushing Defense
      Utah: 31
      ASU: 21

      Time of Possession
      Utah: 2
      ASU: 19

      Red Zone Offense
      Utah: 89
      ASU: 113

      Red Zone Defense
      Utah: 88
      ASU: 127

      3rd Down Offense
      Utah: 114
      ASU: 49

      3rd Down Defense
      Utah: 4
      ASU: 93

One takeaway here is that there appears to be a strong correlation between time of possession advantage and bad red zone offense.

another is that Utah is really freaking bad at converting 3rd downs (33%) which is why there’s been so many 4th down attempts this year. get that number up into the 40’s and the offense will look a lot better, even though the playcalling won’t have changed noticeably.

That’s quickly fixed with an experienced QB. Should look better tonight

So does this mean they’re worse in the red zone than we are? if so, wow.

Overall, yes. But they have a slightly better RZ TD percentage than us.

We’ve had 22 RZ attempts with 11 TDs (50%). ASU has 24 RZ attempts and 13 TDs (54%).

But does it matter if their scoring offense (#31) is significantly better than ours (#71)?! What is also concerning is that their rushing defense (#21) seems quite good.

Yeah, and that can be explained by the three trips to the redzone against Arizona and only coming away with 3 points.

            That was pathetic.

One interesting stat (maybe the key stat?) is their rush defense. Rated higher than ours. That’s surprising and worrisome, especially if Wilson is our QB.

Yep, I also noted that in my previous comment. I feel we need to score at least 24 to have a good chance. Can our O (assuming Wilson starts) do that?

Their run defense might have as much to do with who they have played as it does with their defense. The rushing offenses they have faced are ranked:

        Wyoming – 117th
        Mississippi State – 91st
        Texas State – 61st
        Texas Tech – 59th
        Kansas – 22nd
