Recently I had a chance to spend some time with a parent of a former Utah Football player who is now in the NFL. We talked about recruiting and all sorts of stuff. He made it very clear to me that the entire reason his son chose Utah Football was Morgan Scalley. Some people think that recruiting will suffer when Whitt finally hangs it up. Perhaps not or not as much as we think.

Scalley has always been a great recruiter and is far from a Whitt 2.0 when it comes to philosophies. If Whitt hangs it up, there’s plenty of reason to be optimistic about the future.

Thanks Tony that’s good news. It will be interesting to see if Whitt steps down how many guys hit the portal or stay with Scalley. With Ludwig gone it’s time for a new era. Next year will be a rebuilding year so let Scalley mold a team with his vision.

I think a big part of why they announced the “coach in waiting” thing was to provide for continuity once Whit DOES leave. They can’t say they didn’t know. They’ve already mulled over what it will be like with the change in head coach. So I think less people would hit the portal once Whit leaves than most anyone would think.

I have never understood the Whittingham 2.0 statements. That sounds pretty great to me. Sustained growth for a very long time and regular winning seasons with good wins. The offense has been rough for Whittingham but he has had flashes of brilliance.

The bring in Jay Hill crowd don’t make a lot of compelling arguments for me. Especially when it comes to Whitt 2.0. Jay Hill can be hired away from TSPP at any point if Scalley fails. I believe it is some subconscious obsession that they know it will hurt TSPP and want that to happen before anything else. There are fans that are obsessed with that school. As much as we make fun of the religious zealots at TSPP there are people that just hate the Church.

I mostly miss the PAC12 and the years we didn’t play TSPP. My personal belief is the Title IX cases should have nuked TSPP but the government sucks more than any church so here we are.

One of things I love about Morgan is he know the importance of an explosive offense. Yes he’s a defensive coordinator mind but he was a captain and all American with Urban Meyer. So he understands the need for both sides of the ball to be humming. And MS has said he wants a “Urban-like offense.”

This is great to hear and probably best case scenario. The program has been building for quite a while now and I think we all hope that that trajectory continues, even if it’s not a linear ascension.

That said, I think the biggest concern, even with Whitt, is how his pitch to recruits will land in this new NIL environment. In the past, they could sell guys on buying in, working hard, and getting good NFL opportunities, regardless of your recruiting ranking. Hell, guys like Tim Patrick are still in the NFL, and Utah’s never been a factory for skill position players.

In a P2 world (which is where we’ll end up eventually, no doubt), if Utah’s on the outside looking in, not only will they have less money to offer, but less media exposure (let alone convincing recruits to come to SLC as opposed to Miami, LA, other locations). They’ll need to have a very, very sound program and pedigree to lock those recruits in, imo.

Here’s hoping they can salvage this season and reload for next.

The portal takes away but it also gives pretty fast. Teams can rebuild very fast IMO. Utah needs to stick with its player development ways and get better in the portal arena. Who was that kid from Idaho State that was the blocking TE. We need to pull in guys like that, Anthony Woods would be nice to have this year.

Oh man Logan Kendall? The rhino? He was my favorite player on the 2022 team. He was such a beast blocking.
