I heard from a fairly reliable source that the team is not a fan of Isaac and does not believe he should’ve been the one taking over when Cam went down. I will say that Isaac is almost always standing alone on the sidelines during the game from what I’ve seen. I know that doesn’t necessarily mean anything but it’s just an observation I’ve made. Perhaps this is what Bernard was alluding to with what he said after the game Saturday. But as someone else pointed out, the energy of the team didn’t seem to change much when Rose went in so who knows.
The fact that this is even something that is out there is an issue in my opinion. If Utahs culture is supposedly like a family, then the team should’ve had Isaac’s back and played as hard for him as they would for anyone else. But at the end of the day, we have no idea what happens behind closed doors besides what leaks out which may or may not be true.

Even My wife has even commented on the lack of players helping each other up after plays, especially Wilson.
Maybe more here than we want to believe. Money and NIL was always going to lead to this outcome for the record.

Where is Cam in this Qb debacle? If anyone has the pulse of the team it’s him. Why wouldn’t he step up and be a leader even if he’s out. Let the coaches know about the team concerns. These aren’t high schools kids anymore. Team leaders have access to coaches. Maybe Whitt and Ludwig wanted IW to be the the new Cam but he’s not.

That’s exactly what I’ve been saying since Cam went out. There’s no leadership in this team on or off the field. Besides Bernard I haven’t seen anyone step up or give a damn.
There’s also a lot more clowning around and being c**ky on the field than previous years I’ve seen. Thats also due to lack of leadership.
I know this doesn’t bother some of you but watching players on the side lines laughing and joking it up while this team gets beat down p**ses me off. But that’s just the Marine in me.

My grandpa served in WW2. And played at Utah in the 40s. I can just imagine if he was alive and watching. Ohhh boy. Even at 80 he was a BAMF.

In response to “Where is Cam in this Qb debacle?” We know that Bernard was named as an offensive captain two weeks ago, on 10/15 after Cam’s leg injury sustained on 10/11 was announced as “season ending.” I imagine that Cam’s access to and participation in team meetings and practices has either been extremely restricted and not encouraged or no longer allowed at this point.

Rising had been separated from the team for a lot longer than since this latest injury. Guys will keep their mouths shut about one player getting the most money and attention when the team is winning. But that doesn’t mean they like or dislike the guy. Once things start going bad is when you find out how many different factions there really are in the locker room.

Cams been in the QB room all year. He is aware of the other QBs strengths and weaknesses. I’m sure he has heard any rumblings in the locker room. He has a good relationship with Whitt and Ludwig. I’d like to think there is some communication going on as to who should be playing QB.

There is someone who posts on the Utah football subreddit who seems to be fairly well connected who said that they heard from multiple sources this last week that there is strife in the locker room and some “key players” have entitlement issues.
I’d hope it’s not Wilson, especially considering how he’s played the last few weeks, but his brother is a bit of a bonehead so I guess it wouldn’t be the most surprising thing in the world.

There’s a reason Zach was never a captain.

Silver, I’ve also heard from 3rd hand sources that Isaac is acting entitled (which maybe shouldn’t be a surprise given Zach is his brother).

I think it’s entirely plausible that in Wilson’s recruitment, Whitt guaranteed his place in the depth chart in order to secure his commitment. After seemingly whiffing on Zach, there was probably a lot of pressure to secure Isaac’s recruitment. Being basically handcuffed to favoring Wilson even if Rose or Huard are outperforming him in practice would fit the rumors about Wilson acting entitled and coaches/players being frustrated by the QB selection.

I think it is hard to expect a young freshman to offer a ton of leadership. I think that may have been a plus if Bryson stayed – we all know he was no superstar but he likely inspired some confidence because he has been in the fight.
I always imagined our strong “leadership council” would be able to fill in the void left by an injured leader but evidently not all voices are the same.
I hope this team can just find a way to compete in 2 weeks – I have seen my share games where BYU blows us out – I would have never thought that would happen this year but in all honestly it seems likely as of today.

question for the group, what has Issac done that makes you think he is the qb of right now or for the future ??
-
Jim VanderhoofParticipant
You could say the same for a freshman Daniels at ASU or a first year Cam Ward at WSU or a 5* Moore from UCLA who is now at Oregon. QBs take time to develop. Unfortunately losses come with game experience unless you have a reliable running game.

Nothing on the field as of yet, but I think a lot of people (at least myself, don’t want to speak for others) give him a lot of leeway due to the fact he’s so young and shouldn’t realistically be playing right now. To make an NFL analogy, it’s like a rookie QB playing before he’s “ready” and being OK with the mistakes because you’re looking at the long-term view. Unfortunately the college system isn’t as forgiving (this guy isn’t gonna be your QB for 10+ years if things go right) so it’s leading to more frustration. If IW could have sat the entire year behind a healthy Rising, and then take over next year, I wonder if a lot of the dumb decisions could have been coached out of him. That was always the plan.
That said, a lot of the hope is that there are flashes of big playmaking ability, and in theory, as a guy who has NFL-caliber talent in his family (I think Zach could succeed if he got good coaching to drill the idiocy out of his game) and time in the system, the ceiling is potentially higher than anyone else who could feasibly transfer in for the next year or two. If he’s acting like an entitled brat in addition to his sporadic play, though, that changes things.
I think it is really telling that he got benched last week. If they were committed to him and the locker room supported him, I feel like they would have let him continue playing and try to work through the struggles. If he sucks and has an attitude problem, the locker room would revolt if he kept playing.

I agree with Silver. I do think that he has potential, and the situation he is in is almost impossible. I really hope that he develops and becomes a Utah legend. That said, he hasn’t shown anything at the college level for us to go all in on IW. If the Utes aren’t active in the portal looking for a game-ready quarterback next season, that is coaching malpractice.
May take on the Wilsons from 1,500 miles away:
I think Zach was the ultimate covid-merchant. He got all sorts of pub being one of the only teams practicing and playing every week. They beat up on teams who weren’t fully practicing in a super weird environment. He was never that great, as shown by his NFL career which is basically over at this point.I worry that our coaches took a lot of flak for passing on Zach after he got drafted so high. We couldn’t possibly say no to little brother, and risk “missing” on him too. So we bring him in with all the fanfare required these days and anoint him the chosen one right off the bat. Seems like a recipe for disaster in the locker room.

Isaac showed flashes of brilliance as a HS qb, but was more dual threat. He definitely has to learn the college game and to become a good qb, must either overwhelm with physical talents OR (and a little AND) read defenses, make quick decisions while making multiple reads, etc. With higher talent in college, that’s a big adjustment (HS often is one read and go or split the field to simplify).
Zach, well, I agree with others that he probably wasn’t a 1st rounder, let alone #1 pick. Good qb, but needs coaching and to take it on. Him not getting much better with Sean Peyton is all I really need to know, but he doesn’t make good decisions. He’s probably a perennial backup unless he improves his footwork and decision making. Rodgers (definitely not as good as he was, but still can manage games like Peyton Manning in Denver) doing WORSE record-wise with the JETS just shows more of how disfunctional that team is.
