I was anticipating Lohner jumping as high as he could or some semblence of a FG block (from the edge, couple LBs jumping, trying to jump over like earlier in the season) but did I see it wrong? Seemed like it was an extra point – line pushes but really just watch to see if he misses?

They were trying on the edge. I was watching that.

Lohner wasn’t in on any of the field goals which was strange. I figured the first few they didn’t put him in because they were being cautious of a fake, but when I didn’t see him on that last one I was very confused. Wish we could’ve seen the jump over the line play that’s been happening all year in the nfl

This was the most baffling thing of the night for me. Lohner has already blocked at least 1 FG this season, he’s 6-8 and can jump, he’s been out there on most FG attempts. On a 44 yard FG the trajecetory is lower than most, why on earth was he not out there like he usually is sticking a hand up?

byu-p has pulled off a few fakes this year, so we re-tooled the FG block team to be more fake-safe (basically just kept the defense on the field). Problem was there wasn’t a timeout or stoppage of clock prior to the FG attempt, so just didn’t have time to be like “wait, zero chance of fake here, get Lohner in”. Kick had a pretty high arc so likely wouldn’t have mattered, but for sure sucks wondering what if.

My guess is there is an injury of some sort, making that play for him ineffective.

TDS has a history of fakes. Didn’t they run one the week prior? I think we were careful on how we attacked to manage some risk of over commitment.

I remember when Whitt had the reputation for being willing to run anything at any time so the other team always had to keep on their toes. Not sure I can trace that going away to Ludwig coming in or Sitake leaving but it’s been more noticeable every year that he is taking less and less chances.
I know he goes for a lot of 4th downs but those aren’t attempts to trick anyone. When was the last time we saw a fake punt? Wishnowsky? Has anyone thought in the last 5 years when Utah lines up for a FG or extra point that there’s a chance they might do anything besides kick it? I can’t even really point to a specific time this year when I thought Utah was actually trying to block a punt or might try a momentum changing onside kick outside of the last two minutes of the game while behind.
At this point, it feels like if you have access to Whitt’s analytics sheet, you can call every play before it happens. The offense and special teams definitely reflect that viewpoint. And he’s gone to such great lengths to keep his defense off the field that it feels like he is afraid to show the world that his best asset is living off past reputation instead of current ability.

Good point. If we are going to fair catch it anyway, why not go for max block everytime?

other teams sure do it to Utah enough that you’d think we might try it back at least once a game.
