And then they say it’s not a Truckstop Conference…the Big 12 are the “useful idiots” of college football…the only reason why someone from the Big 12 will get into the CFP is because it’s mandatory that the conference champion receive a bid…but I got to tell you, it wouldn’t surprise me to see a one-loss Big 12 conference champion get ranked below Boise State if the Broncos win out…

I’ve been saying this all year. All it takes is a couple losses to the big 12 champ and Boise state gets the 4 seed. But then again if byu ends up as the 6 seed or whatever then we’ll just hear about how it’s a good thing somehow, someway.

I agree with you about the potential of Boise outranking a 1 loss conf champ.
One minor correction is that technically it’s not mandatory for a B12 or any conference champion to make it to the CFP. There is no autobid.

The Miami UteParticipant
Is that right? I thought all P4 conference champions received an automatic bid to the CFP. So, it’s conceivable for a presumptive Big 12 Champion to lose all their OOC games and, say 1 or 2 additional conference games, but win the CCG and get left out of the CFP?
-

correct. It’s the 5 highest ranked conference champions that get autobids with the four highest ranked getting byes. That guarantees a G5 but doesn’t limit it to only one.
It’s conceivable that a P4 school could lose 2 of their non-cons like Utah did in 2021, lose two more in conference but still qualify for their CCG. Then that 4 loss team wins the CCG. In the old model, the committee could still take TCU over 3 loss K State in 2022. Now the committee has to either take the 4 loss champ or decide if two G5 champs were more qualified.
In that scenario, the committee could still take the higher ranked P4 school that lost in the CCG as an at-large which would satisfy each of the P4 conferences getting at least one entrant while not having to award a 4 loss team a bye. And quite frankly, if you were the #6 or 5 seed, wouldn’t you love getting rewarded with a G5 in the 2nd round instead of a top P4?

This is what I found regarding selection and seeding to the CFP:
The five highest-ranked conference champions receive automatic bids to the College Football Playoff (CFP), including the four Power Four conference champions and one Group of Five champion. The top four seeds receive a first-round bye, and the fifth-ranked conference champion is seeded based on their ranking. If the Group of Five champion is not ranked in the top 12, they are automatically placed 12th. The remaining seven bids are awarded to the best at-large teams in the country.
Sounds like automatic bids to me.

Yep. This is not a meritocracy/charity letting just ANY 5 conferences in. It’s still P4 tilted (with a bone thrown to 1 G5 team – usually) and the SEC and B1G filling most of the at-large spots. There is no way 2 G5 teams get in to shutout a P4 conference (presumably Big 12 or ACC).
I could see a one-loss or even two-loss (CU) Big 12 team being the only representative with B1G being the #1 seed, SEC #2, one-loss Miami #3 (but ranked 6-8), and one-loss Boise State #4. That would leave Big 12 champ likely in the 10-12 range, not even having a home game 1st round. I think for the Big 12, it’s either the #3 (undefeated BYU), or lower seed (1-loss BYU or two-loss CU or any other outcome).

Based on the selection criteria the Big 12 still seems like the best path to the CFP for Utah right now. I have confidence that things will be righted. The defense is still a top in the country and Utah just needs an average offense to be very competitive.
Right now I think the Big 12 would love to see a CU vs BYU conference championship game. That would draw eyeballs with Deion’s team playing.

If that’s the case, we can probably expect a few bogus flags this weekend. Kind of glad that personal requirements will keep me from watching the game.
