Saturday morning ramblings. I think some on here are confusing wanting the best QB option to win games (what the players wanted as well) with giving up on the true freshman. The frustration comes from seeing he was not the best option week after week to win in ‘24 and was seemingly (my opinion) promised the back up job. Regardless of how he plays. It’s foolish to expect a true freshman to come out and not have struggles. Completely normal. He’s 18. It’s also foolish to not think that the fanbase and locker room would grow VERY frustrated when it’s overtly obvious it’s not working. I fully believe IW will eventually be a solid D1 QB. But there were guys who came back and transferred here to win. So when the season is spiraling and it seems like we are catering to someone in the fear of losing him, that’s when a locker room implodes.

I hope Isaac does not choose to leave the program. We had a lot of problems not related to the QB. Our offensive line was simply not very good IMO. The play calling was not good, etc., etc.

I still think that Wilson has the chance to be very good IMO.

The offensive line was fine. If you noticed, they played a lot better for QBs not named Wilson.

        The play calling was horrendous.

If Wilson transfers it makes things even worse because it cost Rose valuable experience. If Wilson stays at least one of our QBs for next year got some game experience.

For a team that had lost 7 straight and not bowling they played hard and never gave up. I hope we keep our good players and fill in a few weaknesses with the portal. We lose 21 seniors so the leadership of the remaining players will be crucial to keep the boat afloat.

But even without that extra experience, Rose looked better.

My posts may not be interpreted this way but I am not in favor of running players, or even coaches off. I just want the job to get done every week and don’t really care who does it.

There are a lot of guys on offense who got plenty of reps this year that will need to improve and Wilson is one of them. Even though it is trending that way, college football is not the pros and these kids aren’t finished products by any means. Regarding Wilson specifically my hope is that after he recovers from whatever his injury(s) is, he is treated by the staff as one of the QB’s in the room fighting for the QB1 job instead of the heir apparent and he (Wilson) approaches the offseason the same way.

A good comp for Wilson might be Bo Nix as a freshman at Auburn. He took his lumps for years and was considered a bust. Finally, when his experience level got paired with a couple of OC’s who were willing to tailor an offense to his skillset the talent was able to show. It would be silly to claim Wilson can work himself into the 1st round and NFL starter but if he’s willing to humble himself and do the work, Wilson can still do great things in a Utah uniform.

Promising #2 status and mop up duty as long at #1 stays healthy is one thing. The coaches should not have felt obligated to make #2 the interim #1 after the starter was injured, and then #1 after the starter had his season ending injury. In hindsight, certainly, making Wilson the #1 QB seems rather foolish.

I’m old school in thinking the QB position should be merit based. The best QB plays, period! If you suck, you lose your starting position. It was clear that was not the case this year, and that made it extremely frustrating.

I put a tongue in cheek comment about him going to BYU. My actual opinion is that he could be great and I would be happy to have him stay and be in a true quarterback competition.

However, if the rumors of him being entitled and/or that the team doesn’t like him then I would transfer if I was him. Find a place you fit with the team culture. If that’s here, great, if not then we are fine without him.

Isaac Wilson continued to look like a deer in the headlights several games in. It seemed his decision making time got worse, not better as the season went on. It’s pretty bad when your 5th string comes in and looks more confident and competent than the injured starter. Hell, Bottari seemed much better than Wilson and I doubt Bottari would start for any other power 4 team.

It actually got worse as the season went on and that’s on coaching. If there was one guy on the team who could go into a coma Sunday morning and wake up the following Saturday ready to run the offense the way it was intended it was Rising. And who got reps in practice every week for 2 years until he was declared done for the season? Rising

When you set up kids to fail, it shouldn’t come as a surprise when they do. And putting the handcuffs on a kid trying to get by on talent alone like they did with Wilson this year is almost criminal. Look at Wilson’s demeanor on the sidelines against SUU, where he was joking and laughing even after throwing a pick, and compare to Houston where he looked like he was being bullied. You just can’t expect 7th year QB play out of a freshman so you have to make the offense something the freshman can handle and be successful. Utah didn’t, even after the OC change.

Last night was the perfect example. In a game with nothing to lose, the offense played not to lose. If last night wasn’t the perfect time to go out there and just have fun, I don’t know what was.

Bottari had zero pressure on him.
Season was already tanked, no other QB on the roster that would replace him. No one expected anything of him, etc.

Completely different scenarios and the offense was exactly the same with him under center.

I feel so bad for Dorian Singer. He could have gone to a pass offense so much better.

He did nothing at USC last year with the top QB in the nation. So maybe part was him not getting open. Williams seemed to be open more than Singer the last two games.

@TheMiamiUte called it a couple of years ago when he questioned Singer leaving Arizona. Turns out it’s a lot easier getting touches with Cowing and McMillan also needing to be covered.

Except, I can’t even count the number of times he was open and the ball couldn’t even reach his feet.

I love Singer. But I don’t feel bad for him.

He’s everything we always complain about.

Bailed on Arizona to go to USC. When that didn’t work for him, he bailed on them.

        Karma is a bitch sometimes.

He played hard every snap for our team. He might be the best WR we have had since Smith. Being critical of Singer is wrong. So he changed teams. It’s now the norm in college football.

As do I. He had the talent of a second rounder but will be lucky to be drafted in the first 5 rounds. I do however think teams will see him for the athlete and hard worker he has been his whole career, so he should be drafted at some point.

Utah will be better off if Wilson transfers. He doesn’t know how to lead and isn’t respected in the locker room. The players aren’t behind him. His dad has been shopping him for NIL since mid season.

I’m not saying Rose will be QB1 next year, but he has the respect of the locker room and the guys got behind him and were vocal about their support of him in the locker room.

Thank you, jshame. And no need to disclose that. It’s been a bad locker room situation with Wilson and I’m sure others can verify that. There were jokes that he was “voted off the island,” by the team.

People are going to have to start really getting their heads around letting go of sunk costs.

Whatever happened with Wilson/Rose.. this year doesn’t matter. Go get the best player right here. Period. Until there are multi-year contracts there’s no investing in the future. There’s paying for right here right now.

Re: Singer. He was clearly playing hard. Open so much more than he got the ball. I feel bad for the other players that showed up too though he was just one of many who were victims of a totally dysfunctional offense.

How do we know he was promised anything?

I think it is a much worst scenario. Utah coaching is just bad at evaluating Quarterbacks.

They wanted Zach Wilson to start at safety. They switched a couple other gamers to the defensive side of the ball. We assume that it was for the best but I just challenge their ability to evaluate QBs.
