Utah moved to 7-1 with a win over Eastern Washington, but it wasn’t without drama. It was a close game until Utah pulled away late. It was a night where the 3 wasn’t falling, but Utah was able to win by going inside. Fouls were a big issue for both teams. EWU kept it close by shooting an insane 96% FTs.

Madsen went off (again)…he’s now 12th in the NCAA in ppg. Ausar had his best night as a Ute. On the downside, Shark seemed off – he passed up multiple open lane drives in favor of a kickout. He needs to be more aggressive with the ball.

      Go Utes!

It was a fairly respectable crowd considering it was a holiday weekend afternoon game. Hard game to enjoy honestly. Way too many free throws, game had no flow. Glad to get the win though. Nice to be in attendance for some wins the last 2 days

Mongolian Mike had many open shots, 3 point and closer in, and missed most of them. Don’t quite understand after seeing his shooting motion and makes in previous games. Hope he gets it going.

The Utes need multiple outside scorers to loosen up the defense on G Madsen. Ausar is a real nice inside threat, but needs to get his percentage up on free throws.

The Utes seem to play pretty good Defense most of the time. Hopefully they can be competitive when Big12 time rolls around.

I will NEVER understand the FT struggles. It’s an unguarded shot from 15 feet. Any D1 athlete should be able to consistently make that shot at at least a 75% clip. 3 of 4 is not too much to ask and failure to at least achieve that is a failure mentally and/or a failure of accountability. 8/20 for Ausar and Lovering combined… UNACCEPTABLE

Hopefully Shark just had an off night, his shots were nice and soft just not falling, two or three rimmed out.

If the Utes made half of their missed foul shots it would have been a blowout. They need to get the psychologist from the gymnastics team to work with them.

The foul shooting is what kept the game close against E. Washington and it was infuriating to watch. E. Washington missed only one out of eighteen and we missed 17 foul shots. Is there no emphasis to practice foul shots, enough practiced foul shots creates muscle memory and rhythm, which creates a higher percentage. Coach Smith should have these guys end practices by shooting at least 100 free throws before they are done.

As I have always told my boys who play organized basketball, the foul shot is the easiest shot in basketball.

Free throws have been a bugaboo for the Smith-led Utes for the last couple of seasons. At the Arizona game last season that Utah lost in 3 OTs, the Utes shot 47 percent from the line. They shoot just 50 percent, 50 percent!!! and the game doesn’t even go into OT. There was also a close loss to ASU in that same homestand where the Utes only hit 46 percent of their free throws. Even this season, in the loss to Mississippi State, the Utes only hit on 57 percent of their free throws. It’s just totally inexcusable to not be able to hit free throws and leave so many points on the table.

Each of those games left a serious scar on my psyche. This falls squarely on Smith, period. It is simply infinitely possible to turn almost anyone into a decent to good FT shooter. Muscle memory is part of it, technique is part of it, psychology is part of it. I said it before, I’ll say it again and again; there is simply no reason a D1 athlete can not throw a ball into a ring 15′ away that is twice the size of the ball at LEAST 3 times out of 4. Period. FIX IT!! ARRRRRRRGH
