Glad to have something finally nailed down. Based on the rumors from this site, it’s disappointing we couldn’t land our first options but I think this will work out good. Hopefully Beck is given latitude to make offensive changes as he sees fit.

I’m not thrilled with this hire. But it’s better than pressing the easy button and giving the job to Bajakian I guess. Whatever.

I get it. But honestly looks at his offense. We only needed semi coherent QB play and offensive output this season to hit 9 or 10 wins. 33.7 points per game last year for New Mexico. The Lobos were #4 in total offense for 2024. Just behind Miami and Ole Miss. #5 rushing offense. A spot in front of Boise State and 2200 yard rusher and possible Heisman winner Ashton Jeanty. The #15 red zone offense. Just behind Miami. Named to the Frank Broyles Award, which honors college football’s top assistant coach. He’s great friends with Morgan. Very good QB coach. I’m happy.

So sounds like he could stay on even when Whitt leaves if he is great friends with Morgan. As long as he is producing that is. I wonder how he is as a recruiter.

I don’t know how to feel about this hire. Feels like a safe choice, like Ludwig.

Does this mean we won’t have to read anything more for caliman?

Oh God, this is so horrible! It’s not Arbuckle or Leftwich! It’s over, it’s all over, the Utes are a dead team.

      DOOOOOOM!

        Seriously 😂
Take his last name away, BYU and Bronco ties as well and fans would be very happy.

The only part that’s a little surprising is that it is not like Whitt and Bronco had a good relationship or got along all that well.
With Beck tied so closely to Bronco for his playing and much of his coaching career is why that popped into my brain.

Sounds like Bronco is trying to get the Utah State job. Whitt could offer a lot more and if you are going to be in Utah anyway.,,

There’s nothing inherently wrong with hiring someone with Utah, Utah State or parochial school ties. It would just be my preference to try something new once in a while.

Bronco is the aggies next head coach. Just hasn’t been officially announced yet.

Yeah, I may not have been clear. I saw an article that Bronco wants the Utah State job and would assume he would try to bring Beck with him since they’ve got a 10 year relationship across multiple schools. Whitt can offer more than Bronco can in salary so why not take the money?

I’m trying to shorten my posts but have never been good at saying what I need to in single sentences.

I like it. He’s creative with his offensive play calling. New Mexico put up more points vs similar competition. Was he the first choice? My guess is no due to WSU and TexSt, but maybe this helps Isaac stay to develop, and Beck can also develop our new QB recruit out of Oklahoma. Maybe Dampier will get here and be a good stop gap at QB while we figure things out. He might not be the most accurate QB but man that dude is pretty dynamic.

I think most people know it won’t change much offensively with Whitt still the HC

I like it! It’s not a flashy hire but he turned New Mexico around in a year. All Utah needs is an average offense.

Very underwhelming hire. I’ll wait to watch 3-4 Utah games before I say he sucks but missing out on two guys (3 according to OnlyU but I haven’t heard anything else) is pretty telling about our situation. We could’ve had a lot of these guys coming to the U if there was more planning on what was going on with coach Whitt. I firmly believe Whitt is staying and dooming the program with another family and friends hire. Literally these inner circle hires have been a problem for Utah (and byu for that matter) for a number of years now

Arbuckle was head of the 22nd ranked offense last year.
Leftwich was head of the 6th ranked offense last year.
Beck was head of the 4th ranked offense last year.

Beck has more experience at the FBS level than either of those other guys. Spent many years in ACC at Virginia and then at Syracuse. I recognize Arbuckle and Leftwich were hotter items (allegedly), but Beck seems like a better coach on paper. He also knows Utah well – which is a nice perk. I am on board with this hire.

He may be a better coach on paper, but like Leftwich his teams played garbage competition. My concern with Beck is recruiting.

OC doesn’t fix bad position coaching, but here’s to any semblance of improvement next year.

RB, oline and QB coach to start…
But pick one. Not a single offensive group lived up to the offseason hype.

I give a pass to the WR since we didn’t have a QB that could get them the ball when open. QB was either flat on his back, running for his life, or standing there like they stared into the loving gaze of Medusa.

Repeating much of what was already said.

I’m not disappointed, but I’m not going to allow myself to get super excited either. No matter who we got, my feeling was and still is to reserve judgement until we’re at least 3-4 (maybe even 6) games into next season. Maybe the other two guys were higher up on the target list. Maybe not though. Aren’t all three more in the same bucket of quality (as opposed to being on completely different levels)?

All that said, I admit that I am hopeful about this hire. The stats aren’t perfect, but they’re definitely good and against legitimate competition. It seems to fit more inline w/ what led to Utah’s success over the past 10+ years (run first offense). I wish New Mexico’s QB completion % was 5-10 points better. The TD to INT ratio doesn’t bug me as much considering the guy did throw for nearly 3,000 yards (he passed quite a bit) and he ran for 19 TDs. I would be excited if he transferred to Utah (and if we got their RB too).

To me, this hire feels like a deviation from what Whit has traditionally done (it’s not a brand new OC or an old OC that was either already washed up or soon to be), so I’m inferring Scalley was indeed involved in this process. Ludwig was great for a while and I’m way grateful about what he gave us over all the years (some of the best seasons we’ve ever had), but it was time for a change. Our offensive production was so bad last year that it’s hard to imagine this guy doing worse.

My one gripe w/ the hire is that Beck is a true blue Cougar. It won’t matter for the product on the field, but I just kind of wish that wasn’t there.
