First of all. I think its silly that some Ute fans automatically think previously connected to Whitt/BYU/State of Utah = bad. Ludwig was a great OC for us for several years. We had a damn good offense under him when our QB wasn’t broken. What about the OC’s he hired that he didn’t have a connection to? Troy Taylor and Christensen or whatever his name was, both of them were bad. Point is, him (meaning Beck) having connections to people on the staff is not a reason to complain.

Second, based on the numbers, this seems like a good hire. The previous guys we’ve hired (Outside of Ludwig) have either been brand new OCs, has beens, or coming from a lower division of football. Many Ute fans have wanted an up and coming type guy for a while. He is that guy. Sure, he may not have been choice #1, but this is a good hire on paper.

      My main questions with Beck:
      – Can he recruit? Say all you want about Ludwig, but he was a good recruiter.
      – Can he evaluate QB talent, and offensive talent in general? This is where it appears Ludwig struggled. I don’t know why, but Ludwig’s downfall was consistently recruiting QBs that had high rankings, but ultimately had no business quarterbacking at the P5 level.
      – Can he develop QBs? Its hard for me to evaluate how Ludwig did here. Rising seemed to improve quite a bit while he was here, and Huntley improved under Ludwig as well… but the backups have been consistently bad. I have no idea if Beck is good at QB development.

If he can be a step up in at least 2 of these three areas, he will help us improve as a team.

Side note: I really hope Rising doesn’t come back, I’m ready to move on to the next chapter of Utah football. I’d be more excited if Whitt was also gone, but if he stays one more year, thats okay too.

His first test will be a TP QB that is an upgrade over what Utah had last year.
