These are the facts, and they are undisputed.

AnferneeParticipant
#5 rushing offense in the nation this past season. A spot in front of Boise State and 2200 yard rusher Ashton Jeanty.

@Anfernee: I’ve come to expect more from you than the same cut(s)/paste(s) on every thread

Definitely looks like we will see more rushing and read-options.
Also helps explain why we have been going after faster backs that maybe on the lighter side, if we are now focusing on getting to the edges, off tackle and into space.
-
Ute DubParticipant
Exactly. We spent a whole season learning that 4 TE’s and not spreading the field makes for smaller holes for the back to run through.
-

I’d like to see the stats and percentages on how often the Utes had formations of 1, 2, and 3 TE sets cause I don’t remember really seeing that many TE heavy sets like I expected going into the season. That includes a TE lining up or wide in a WR spot.

these stats do not mean too much, lower levels of competition
-
Ute DubParticipant
New Mexico beat Wazzu who had the other OC and QB that we wanted.
Utah with only 7 rushing TD’s means a whole hell of a lot. Utah in ‘21 and ‘22 had 37 and 38 rushing TD’s. What happened? Should we bring Ludwig back?

I keep seeing comments about how New Mexico had the #4 offense and high touchdown numbers, but I haven’t once seen any comments about the defenses they faced. I just looked up the defense rankings for all the teams New Mexico played. Excluding FCS, they played 11 FBS teams with defense rankings from #32 (Auburn) to #129 (Utah State). Simple average ranking of the 11 teams they played is #90. That #4 Offensive ranking doesn’t sound as great anymore…

Arizona #108
Auburn #32
Fresno State #54
New Mexico State #120
Air Force #43
Utah State #129
Colorado St #94
Wyoming #106
San Diego st #114
Washington state #115
Hawaii #75I’ve seen comments about how great their win over Washington State was. Against a #115 defense? Yeah…

I’m not on the negative or positive boat in this hire, I’m in the learning, and let’s see who this guy is boat.
So, thanks everyone for posting all these stats.
So, did you look up all the defenses WASSU and TXSU played? Or were you not liking any of these OCs?
-
Ute DubParticipant
You know who has a worse defense than Wazzu at #115? How about New Mexico at #130.
The point about WAZZU is that many fans had a huge boner over their OC and QB. Yet New Mexico beat them while having a worse defense and worse recruiting.

When I check stats, I usually remove the team in question (New Mexico) from the yearly stats and then compare that game to see see if they performed better or worse. For the below I’m calling within +/- 40 yards and +/- 3 points as equal to the opponent’s standard.
Opponent, Opponent AvPPG, Opponent AvYPG, NM score, NM yards:
Arizona: 31.09, 407.82, 39, 471 = better
Auburn: 21.55, 320.09, 19, 448 = better yards, even points
Fresno: 24.91, 343.27, 21, 485 = better yards, close on points
New Mexico State: 35.00, 434.82, 50, 579 = better
Air Force: 20.64, 333.55, 52, 434 = better
Utah State: 36.64, 462.64, 50, 552 = better
Colorado State: 26.00, 389.00, 6, 453 = better yards, worse points
Wyoming: 26.82, 395.55, 45, 576 = better
San Diego State: 30.36, 416.45, 21, 475 = better yards, worse points
WSU: 27.18, 419.45, 38, 534 = better
Hawaii: 25.64, 367.45, 30, 481 = better yards, close on pointsI’m not endorsing Beck but the numbers state unequivocally that New Mexico performed better across the board against their opponents average yards allowed and 64% of the time New Mexico scored more that their opponents average. Small sample & single season caveats apply.
The question I would have which can’t be explained through stats is the disconnect between New Mexico’s yardage ranking (#4) and their points per game (#28). From what I posted on another thread, their red zone scoring was in the top 10 although they ended up kicking FG’s 25% of the time. It’s not great to kick that many red zone FG’s but points are better than failures (cough *Utah* cough). I see two defensive TD’s and a Punt Return TD so if anything, I would expect their scoring to be at least equivalent instead of depressed. Does this point to a team that moves the ball great between the 20’s but has a tendency to stall out as the field shortens?
I’ve got nothing better to do this morning so I’ll do a deep dive on New Mexico’s game logs and see if I can answer my own question on a new thread.
-
StoneParticipant
I do not think anyone is disputing that New Mexico played weaker competition than P4 conferences. But all four of the OCs that were being considered (Washington State, Texas State, UNLV, and New Mexico) are all at that same lower level (New Mexico was essentially in the same conference as Washington State and UNLV). So the critique would apply equally to all four OCs. If you think all four should have been dismissed for an OC at the P4 level, that is fine, but I think most everyone is comparing apples to apples here.
-
-
Ute DubParticipant
They hung 52 points on the #43 defense AFA, but fair point on the rest. But if you’re going to acknowledge that, you have to acknowledge the other side of the coin. THEY’RE NEW MEXICO!. Why don’t you go recruit to New Mexico. Oh, so a mid level MWC team outside the P4 played a #90 average defense schedule? Yeah. That’s about what I would expect.
-
//r00t4UtesParticipant
Yeah, playing with the offensive recruits is definitely something to consider, what he did with the talent available at NM.

I never thought in my lifetime we would be analyzing New Mexico football statistics to feel better about a Utah hire.
-
UtahParticipant
And yet most on here were begging for a Texas St OC and UNLV OC.
Like many have said, if you took BYU and Bronco off Beck’s resume, we’d be happy.
-
Ute DubParticipant
Fair point. But if you’re in the “we lost Arbuckle, wah” crowd then I don’t think you should be in the New Mexico OC sucks crowd when New Mexico beat Wazzu and are very similar in offensive production.
-
UtahParticipant
I totally agree.
I’m ok with it. I don’t think it really matters too much if Whitt is coming back.
I think it will be just fine. Nothing will change. Beck won’t be amazing but won’t be awful. He will be a Whitt OC. And if we lose because we go up 21-10 at halftime and Whitt handcuffs the OC then Whitt will throw Beck under the bus and fire him like he does with all his OC’s.

enigami344Participant
If we are looking at stats, New Mexico and us both played Utah state, and New Mexico had slightly better stats on offense. Just saying. And it was before our melt down so team morale was still good
