It’s official. Jason Beck is our new offensive coordinator. Vote in the latest poll how you feel about that, 1 to 5 stars. Comment in this thread to share your thoughts on why you voted the way you did!

Utes 69Participant
zero, Whitt blew this one as well. Utes need to get out of bed with the cousins and move on.
-
Ute DubParticipant
I’ll differ and say it’s solid. If Utah has a strong run game to go along with a solid defense, Utah wins a lot of games. I don’t really care about the made up relationship you’re trying to project.

Agree with @Utes69. Poll might be more accurate if it was multiple choice:
A) Home Run hire
B) Best Utah could get under the circumstances
C) Meh
D) Some warts but not a complete miss
E) DOOM (nod to @UtesbyFive)I’d vote C on the above and 0 on the star system because even one star means added value.

Anything would be better than what we had, but doesn’t move the needle or the program forward.
Exactly what Whitt wants. Run the ball and kill the clock. I’m concerned QBs and WRs will look else where.
-

That’s why I’m saying no added value. Beck isn’t going to run a true run-spread with all those TE’s on the roster so the playbook will be similar to what we’ve seen the last 6 years. We can only hope the order of the playcalls is more effective than lately.
One TE got 22 catches for 138 yards and 2 scores in the 2024 NM offense. Freddie Whitt’s room isn’t going to be ignored like that while Kyle is around.

3 star. Things will improve as long as the offense gets healthy. See if he can hire his own assistants.

I voted a 3 in hopes that he has eyes and a brain and can adjust when needed, and can tell when to bench a QB that’s damn near in need of a walker.

The 4% must be BYU fans

The Miami UteParticipant
I gave him three stars…hard to justify anything else given his background and experience. Hopefully, he proves me woefully wrong. However, if that happens, he probably won’t be at Utah very long.
-
PhiladelphiaUteParticipant
I was only going to give it a “2”, but OnlyU talked him up enough for me give him a “3”.
Meh.

BleedsRedUteParticipant
I gave hims four stars! I just read his bio on wiki and this is all I am going on. I am a positive thinker, and expect he will bring some exciting new blood to the Offense.
Beck is pretty much a proven commodity. He has been successful in coaching QBs, and most recently in directing the offense at a college level school.
What remains to get him to 5 stars for the Utes is to show he recognizes and recruits Offensive talent in other O coaches, and in players especially at QB and the other skill positions, also that he has an Offensive scheme/plan that is successful in the Big12, and he is a dynamic play caller.
A lot to hope for.
Now, I hope the question of who is HC going forward is announced soon so we can recruit and get ready for next season.

Holladay UteParticipant
Similar take to Miami. I went w/ 3 stars. I think Beck is promising (and as good as we could’ve gotten), but I don’t think we know enough (or have seen enough) to go any higher. I’m encouraged by what he’s done at where he’s been. I’m very intrigued by the strong run game New Mexico generated (this is a part of Utah’s identity / formula for success…and I feel like it’s been on a downhill trend and that we need to get back to it).
-
UM4GParticipant
Meh, I am very whelmed by this choice. Not the worst, not the best. More frustrated that we couldn’t land Arbuckle despite having the budget to make him one of the highest paid OC, then I’m hearing rumors from Locked On Utes that we whiffed on Leftwich by low balling him. Really hope he can work magic for us.
-
PNWUte29Participant
I’m at a 3/5. If Scalley was HC it’d be a 4/5. I really like Beck’s offenses but I’m worried that Whit won’t let Beck be Beck.
-
RoboUteParticipant
He’s probably just great. But it won’t matter after a bit. He’ll end up the same as the rest.
-
AlaskanUteParticipant
My biggest issue is the incestuous relationship we seem to have with TSPP when it comes to coaches. Here’s a novel idea, next time a coaching position comes up, let’s look outside the Wasatch front for someone who doesn’t have ties to you know who. After all, most of the rest of the country play some pretty good football too!
-
EMUte#2Participant
I am not happy. I want a pass happy. High scoring offense. I wanted whitt gone. We are not winning anything under his leadership. He has stayed past his due date. Scalley deserves it.
-
TruckStopTerrorsParticipant
2/5 stars. That’s not to say he won’t be a good hire. It’s my excitement level knowing that this was our 3rd choice, and we’re again dipping into the local pool of coaching.
-
AZUTEParticipant
Until I see whit not get involved in game planning and decision making as it regards to offensive schemes I will withhold my excitement level.
-
RUUTESParticipant
My history of being excited about OC changes has not been supported by the long term reality. So I’m going to remain neutral this round and just let it all play out.
