I foresee conferences not named the B1G and SEC dropping CCGs altogether. I already see some foreshadowing from the talking heads.

I think even the SEC and BIG could get rid of them. Part of me thought Oregon would just roll out their 2s and 3s and let themselves lose to Penn state so they could stay healthy and get the 5 seed, which is arguably a better draw for them

I mean…conference championships were installed for the money only.

So…what pays the conference more? CCG with no playoff team or no CCG and a playoff team?

      That’s your answer.

Or no CCG and multiple playoff teams. So far, the bracket is happening just as I thought.

Much, much respect to the committee. They absolutely made the right call on picking SMU over Bama.

Conference Championship game cost Utah in 2019 and SC in 2022. Both one loss teams that had an argument for the playoff until they lost the CCG. I’ve wanted those CCG’s gone for a long time.

If you play 9 conference games already I see a point. 8 I want to see a championship. Especially with divisions essentially.

I just never saw a reason for the Pac-12 to eliminate themselves which was always the risk. Sure Utah and SC should have won their games to prove that they were the best team in the conference but those weren’t the stakes. It was always the faint hope that by beating someone you had usually already played that year would be enough to overcome the bias of the committee towards other conferences.

Just like the article you linked to the other day: Utah won the conference in the regular season in 2019 outright. SC did also in 2022. The benefit of getting those teams into the playoff would have rewarded Oregon and Utah with Rose Bowls and added about 50 MM to the conferences coffers. Instead Oregon and Utah still went to the Rose Bowls but the playoff money went elsewhere.

I think the committee did a good job. Bama can suck it! Lost to a weak OU, etc..

A little advice for Alabama: Next time don’t lose to Vanderbilt.
