This is something that really, really, really bothers me and we’ve seen it a lot the last few weeks with Whittingham. The whole “He has done so much that he should be able to retire/leave when he wants to!” argument.

I disagree completely. Why are fans the only people asked to be loyal to sports teams? Why is it, “I was born a Philadelphia fan, I must be one forever” when not a soul associated with the sports teams has any loyalty?

Why are fans asked to be loyal when coaches can leave whenever they want? Why should I be loyal to Whitt, when he has taken other interviews and looked at other jobs and then used those interviews to get more money for himself? Why do I have to be loyal to Whitt when he has shut down the fan experience every chance he has gotten? From injury reports to closing practices to being one of the biggest supporters of a running clock in college football (which has led to the games lasting just as long but with less actual football in the four hours I have to sit in front of the tv to watch)?

Why do fans have to be loyal to a player who says they are staying and the second some more cash is tossed their way they are gone?

Nah. Fans, you owe none of these greedy people a thing. If Whitt sucks, boo him. He’s earned it and you’ve earned the right. The second he levered other schools for more money, the second he closed down practices, he opened himself up to the boos. He isn’t owed anything.

      HE OWES US.

He has shaped the program and taken and taken and taken. We don’t owe him anything. He owes us wins, because he said if he was paid more, if he closed practices, if he didn’t report injuries, he’d win more games.

So we obliged him and now he is in debt to the school and the fans.

And same with players. These aren’t kids sacrificing their time and bodies to entertain us anymore. They aren’t working hard in the classroom and then playing and then having a part time job on top of that to pay for things. These are paid professionals who are paid to come to Utah to do a job. And the second they can make more money elsewhere, they bail for that money.

And I’m not saying they are wrong to do this.

But I am saying we don’t owe them loyalty, because not a soul up there on the hill, or any other college football team, is doing what they are doing for the fans. They are each doing what they need to do to further their careers. And the fans are just here to fund all of it.

So, if a player leaves do I wish them success? Honestly…I don’t care. I don’t wish them bad, but I don’t care anymore. I don’t want to hear about how Jackson is doing well on another s**tty team, when he could have stayed here and won the Big 12. I don’t care about where Wilson ends up or how he does.

You wanna leave? I get it. But don’t expect roses or “retire when he wants” or anything else.

You’ve been paid and aren’t owed anything.

The only person who is being screwed in college football is the fans.

      And same with players.

      Agreed.

I just went to Calhoun’s X profile where he announced he’s going to the portal, and I was so tempted to respond something like “I wish you nothing, you traitor.”

      But I didn’t. I won’t say anything.

But I was tempted. Almost did.

I think many fans have had an attitude of “don’t talk bad to players even if they leave.” I doubt that attitude sticks around much longer. Fans will start turning on players soon, if not already.

As far as Whitt is concerned, I was P**SED when he closed spring scrimmages several years ago. My patience with him was tested to the limits this past season. I paid a TON of money for season tickets, and I am seriously thinking if I want to do it more.

      Screw loyalty.

Not trying to be dramatic but instances like this encapsulate everything about college football that is pushing me away from the sport. It’s getting ridiculous, yet no one is implementing boundaries on these things. Now the main focus is on $$$, whether that be transfers, conference realignment, etc etc.

I can rationalize a transfer portal for players looking for a new opportunity, but this whole open bidding war for starters to jump teams for cash is bull s**t

Agree 100%. I believe it’s seriously hurting the sport. The NCAA doesn’t have the guts to do anything and no one else seems to either, so here we are in this mess that we can’t backtrack on.

I think the only hope is for a super-conference to form that becomes a de facto professional league. It would then have some rules about contracts, salaries, etc. The current model is wholly unsustainable. NIL is the death of college football as we knew it…hopefully, it is not the death of college football altogether.

Your only hope is to vote with your feet and don’t renew your season tickets. Otherwise if you do renew then you have made a decision on value to you.

Frankly, it’s a huge turnoff when all this stuff happens and fans are still expected to attend games, buy merchandise, donate to the collective, travel for bowls, etc etc while everyone else is concerned just about the money.

I don’t mind some money for college athletes but the way it’s setup is the Wild Wild West, it’s a free for all that’s ruining college football. It really needs to be regulated and structured in some way with guidelines that need to followed

This is similar to what happened for me with MLB.

In the early 90s as a Pirates fan it really turned me off when Bonds, Bonilla, Van slyke, Bell, Drabek, Belinda, Smiley, Carlos Garcia, Rafael Belliard, Jose Lind were broken up due to $$$$. That was the end of MLB for me. I attend maybe one or two Rockies games a year. And Sid Bream, you’re dead to me.

And shortly thereafter the players went on strike in 94-95, that was the end for me. In the early 2000s I did a quick look and for the preceding 8 years only one team, Miami, won the World Series without a top four payroll in baseball. Then right after the Marlins had a fire sale.

CFB is headed in the same direction.

Until somebody, an adult in the room can fix this NIL highest bidding and tampering it’s only going to get worse. And sadly, I don’t think any adults are going to step up.

      Preach on!

Same here (regarding MLB)! I used to scour over the box scores in the newspaper, knew stats of many players, watched the standings and games religiously. Then free agency happened. Then the strike happened. Then my interest died, almost completely. Maybe it was for the best, as I devoted way too much time to it.

The same has happened to me with college basketball (even before NIL). Players starting changing too much from year to year. Guys would play a year then go pro. College football was the last refuge for me. But it seems to be fading.

You both should give Baseball another go. I’d argue it’s been better now than ever. And the strike was a loooonnnngggg time ago.

AMEN!!! Utah fans who want to s*** on other fans for not being loyal need to read your post! NIL is #1 problem in college football these day. As far as Utah football, I say Whittingham right now is the #1 problem in the program. I think many Utah players could have been salvaged and stay at Utah if it wasn’t for Whitt’s poor mismanagement of the QB situation and handling of the locker room situation by putting a complete lock down on the disarray in the program and going to radio silence with no ounce of accountability for his actions. Go UTES!!!

You mean, pointing to a sign on the wall that says ALL IN OR IN THE WAY, then letting Cam decide when he plays or leaves a game, and then playing the guy that is causing locker room problems despite them calling for a change, has been ramifications???

I don’t believe any comment that Coach Whitt says publicly is true, including the comments from him you are repeating here.

The best way to protest is to not watch the games, buy tickets, merchandise, comment online, etc. If fans stop watching and they start losing money that will cause a change.

That is easier said than done as we are all on fam board commenting about it. We all have an emotional tie to Utah sports and hate the way college sports is going.

It feels like at some ping college football will implode on itself.

I don’t disagree with your whole post, much I do agree with. But take a chill pill, we’ve had one bad year in 20. It shocks me how quickly Ute fans became like Ohio State fans.

Fan comes from Fanatic. Loyalty aka Branding aka Tribalism.

Coke v Pepsi. I’ve seen people pitch a total fit t a restaurant because one was served instead of the other and I know for a fact that the person in question didn’t notice the difference when I passed them the wrong product in a glass in the past.

In other words.. It’s all marketing. We have been convinced as consumers (that is what we are… cheering $$ machines) that our identity is somehow tied to the success of some sports team. We are called the 12th man for a reason…because it makes us FEEL like we matter so we keep participating and paying. If it wasn’t about the money, we would be watching intramurals and sitting on wooden benches still.

I was a season ticket holder for 20+ years…I donated crazy amounts to the CC. And I still enjoy watching my team win so my own lawn needs some mowing here I admit.

Still I find this video puts it back into perspective now and then….worth a watch once a year Sports go sports

Why is the NFL the most successful professional sports league?

Hard salary caps. Revenue sharing. Scheduling by record.

You’d think other sports would at least try to emulate it.
