The portal is, on balance, a good thing. Yes, occasionally, we will lose contributors to teams with more cash. However, I love the idea of players that don’t fit what we are looking for moving on to somewhere else, making room for someone new to get a chance.

I know we want guys to stick around and earn their spot in the rotation, but the reaily is if you aren’t in the rotation after two years on the team, you will likely never be a meaningful contributor. If you aren’t getting weekly playing time as a sophomore, and you aren’t content with sitting the bench and making an impact on the practice squad, you should move on to another team.

As for me, I like the portal because it makes times like this more exciting. We have a chance to swap out guys that just aren’t fitting with guys that just might be what our team needs.

Yes, it isn’t great for team continuity, but neither is having players on the team that don’t want to be here.

I just can’t agree that having the sport become full time, non-stop mercenary transfer chaos is exciting.

      I recognize it as a hot take…but…

      I decline to agree.

When the portal started, NIL was nonexistent. At that time I thought the portal was a good thing for the players and programs. Then NIL started with no controls. NIL killed the portal for me.

I don’t think you are wrong. And I DO think Utah is in a unique position that we will more often than not be winners vs losers in the portal.

BUT, what sucks about it can be wrapped up in Calhoun. He came for one year, did ok, and now is trying to bail. That is ridiculous.

There needs to be contracts. Sure, you want a million dollars as a QB? You sign for two years, you have to play in all bowl games.

Same with someone like Calhoun. They come, sign a minimum 2 year deal, no draft and no skipping bowl games.

I was ok with players skipping bowl games when they were “amateur” athletes, but if I’m asked to spend $1,000 on plane flights and hotels and another $500 for tickets to the Las Vegas Bowl, then I should expect to see the professional athletes I support play in these games.

There is no excuse of “saving my body before the draft” anymore when you are paid to be there.

And you should be forced to stay with your new team for at least two years. Sign out of HS, two year deal. RS first year, chance to play second year. Transfer as a RS FR. Another two year deal OR you stay with your current team. IF you stay with your current team, you play one more year, you are now eligible for the draft.

If you leave your current team, another two year deal. Even though you could be eligible for the draft after your third year, your contract requires you to play two years. So this way, after your RS JR year you are now eligible for the draft OR you can transfer one more time.

Because you lack eligibility, you can only sign a one year deal at your next school.

      This solves so many problems.

I do not totally agree. But, I gave you a thumbs-up for sharing what some may think is an unpopular opinion. I respect your opinion.

I appreciate that, but I don’t need the internet stranger respect. 90% or more of the things I post online (including this post) are random passing thoughts I have with little to no thought put into them. I doubt that is something worth respecting… but I appreciate it nonetheless.

I disagree, but for different reasons that others have given. I simply don’t like the message that the portal sends to these kids: That if you’re not getting what you want, just quit and go somewhere else and keep doing that until you do get what you want. At an impressionable age, we should be trying to teach our young people the opposite.

I get what you are saying, and I agree with the sentiment of it, but I have to disagree. These kids have 4(ish) years to make their dreams of making it big come true. 4 more years of pursuing their dream. If you had a kid who was an athlete at one of these schools, who had a dream of making the NFL, or just had a dream of getting real playing time in a college football game, you wouldn’t tell them to go somewhere else if they stuck it out for a year or two and weren’t getting any attention? They have a limited time to reach their goal. How can anyone fault them for trying to find the best possible situation for achieving that goal?

If they are putting in the effort, and it just isn’t working out, why stick around? What does that teach them? If your boss doesn’t think you are worth paying attention to, just stick it out anyway? Come on. You don’t believe that, and you wouldn’t tell your kid that either. You would tell them to go somewhere where they can accomplish their goals, and where the coaches help them do that.

If the kid isn’t making it because of a work ethic issue, or a commitment issue, that is a different story, but do we really want those kids on the team anyway?

Funny you should mention that. I do have a kid playing an NCAA sport right now (not at Utah), and he’s thinking of transferring. Some issues with the team and with his playing time. And yes, I’ve advised him to stick it out, to not give up, to finish what he’s started, to not quit, and to not go back on his commitment. Because personally I think it’s more important that he learns those lessons than he gets a few more minutes playing a game.

will he listen to me? Maybe, maybe not. If he goes into the portal I’ll support him. But I’ve said my piece.

If that makes me a bad parent in your eyes…well, I guess I’ll have to live with that.

Of course I wouldn’t think you were a bad parent for attempting to instill important values on your kid. I think that is great.

two competing values are at play: 1) going after your dreams, 2) learning to honor your word… integrity… that sort of thing. The way I see it, one of those things ends in 4 years or less, and the other lesson will always be there. Realistically, there may be another dream, but not THAT dream. That dream dies in 4 years or less.

Your situation is not a hypothetical, and there are waaaaaay too many factors involved for me to speak accurately and/or intelligently about what you actually should/shouldn’t do for your kid, so I won’t go there. No judgement from me. Good on you for trying to instill your values on your kid.

Meh, I appreciate it but it’s OK. I don’t base my self esteem on my utehump vote count. Since I’ve had 2 kids play NCAA sports, my perspective on what college sports are really about is probably different from most peoples’ perspectives. To me, college sports are more about developing student-athletes into adults and teaching them skills that will serve them well in life…and less about wins and entertaining fans. And that different perspective means I have a different perspective on things like the portal, which some people aren’t going to like. And that’s fine.

I just wonder how these kids will handle paying their fed and state taxes , agent fees and how to report expenses on the returns.

Yeah, I suspect there are gonna be a lot of mistakes made that will be very costly for some of these guys that don’t get professional help managing their money.

the reality is if you aren’t in the rotation after two years on the team, you will likely never be a meaningful contributor.

oh yeah… that one guy that made it work out of hundreds proves me totally wrong. /s

There is a reason I said “likely never be a meaningful contributor. I’m not claiming that nobody can make it if they aren’t regular contributors by the end of year two, but it is more likely than not that they won’t ever be regular contributors.

Also, Terrell Burgess played in 13 games his second year on the team. He was clearly in the regular rotation. Nice try. If Terrell Burgess is entering the chat at all, he’s entering as proof that I’m correct.
