When the casual fans hit their first game of the year, they’ll say “who are these guys?”
Rent-a-teams. 😑
-
AnferneeParticipant
That’s super disappointing. I feel like so many of these guys feel some form of adversity and bounce. What happened to earning your stripes, grinding through and then taking advantage of opportunities? He’s finally healthy. This is the exact time to stay. Pretty weak IMO.
-
XanthisParticipant
Not surprising really. Utah just added two RBs that had a lot of production last year and changed the RB coach. He probably was going to get less touches next year assuming guys stay healthy.

It is difficult to build depth at a position when everyone wants to be the starter. Even Penn State who is playing the CFP has lost their backup QB t the portal. That could be a disaster if their starter goes down against SMU.
I hate the NIL and portal the way that it is now working.

UtegatorParticipant
I’m all for a portal and letting them go where they want to, but it shouldn’t be a drawn out process. There should be a deadline. Like you have 2 days to enter the portal and then if you’re not in there, you missed open enrollment.

Any other year and I’d be more upset, but after all the rumors we’ve heard of cancer in the locker room this is the one year I’m ok with cleaning house. Don’t know that he was apart of all that, but I wonder if it got bad enough that he just wants a fresh start somewhere else.
-
TednabParticipant
Wasn’t Wilson a part of that ?
-
Ute DubParticipant
I know, right? I had no issue with Wilson going into the portal. Mitchell didn’t really get it going much either.
-
UM4GParticipant
I heard Wilson was and I think Onlyu mentioned several others that were also guilty that had left or were on their way out. Just meaning that without knowing for sure, this year I’m not as bummed about players leaving, whether they were apart of the problem or just needed to get a fresh start or whatever their reason may be.

That’s a shame. I thought he had potential. However, i was not a fan of Ganther and the production that came from the RB room outside of Micah. We have some good new RB recruits and some depth at RB with transfers.
-
Ute DubParticipant
I wondered about Ganther. Is he hard to play for? Tavion Thomas was great under Kiel McDonald, and struggled under Ganther. I know Tavion had his issues, but shoot, what could have been for him if he got his stuff together? He had a very high ceiling beyond college football, if healthy and his head on straight.

AlohaUteParticipant
Maybe he just wasn’t a good coach?

Hard saying if MM is that big of a loss considering the depth of offense issues. The entire offense including coaches minus the Oline is a redo. A restart for MM might be a good thing for him. Beck has his guys coming in to run his offense. This overhaul is relatively new for Utah and us fans. My only concern is KW staying out of the way. No shortage of off season activity.
-
D TParticipant
Bingo….The wildcard in the whole deal is Coach KW.
-
Ute DubParticipant
I liked Zack Moss in the spread / read option, wider holes to run through, more spread out, more runs to the outside. This past year, double TE’s and triple TE’s seem to shrink the holes without a Logan Kendall TE.
“Beck’s option attack this past season featured a good mixture of outside and inside running. It featured option-reads with split-zone, counter, and power blocking schemes up front.”
The option attack requires faster backs. I don’t know that Mike Mitchell was built for that.

Mitchell ran a 10.81

He didn’t seem to have great vision or feel. I don’t know if that was a product of the injuries but usually those intangibles are not something you learn. You either have them or you don’t.
I got blasted last time for saying this board wanted to burn it to the ground and when the flames started they ran for their buckets. Well this is what burning it to the ground looks like. Utah got the top two RB transfers on their board. The writing is on the wall, and the new offensive coaching staff is retooling the roster.
-
UtahParticipant
So a kid comes in, gets every opportunity to shine, isn’t great, and then instead of improving and fighting after the coaches and fans backed him all year just bails when he isn’t handed more opportunities?
Cool. Good luck man.
