Utah now 0-3 in conference play.

He’s not a P4 level player. And I mean no disrespect. Our roster is chuck full of guys exactly like Erickson. And it’s been that way for years now.

RavenuteParticipant
Correct. Hunter Erickson never was and never will never be a P4 level guy. Thats reality

I bet he would wreck the intramural leagues!

Hunter works his tail off out there, but for each game he lights it up for a handful of threes, has a few others where his shots are falling and has a high number of turnovers.
(Same goes for a number of players on this team)

But that’s my problem with Craig Smith. Too many guys are one dimensional on offense, including our best player Gabe Madsen. The Madsen brothers shot a combined 19 3’s last night, made 4. If the 3 isn’t falling, they need to get into the paint and kick back out or score or get to the free throw line. We started Lovering and Auser who haven’t taken a 3 this year, then we have Miro Little who is shooting 28% from 3 on the year. We’re not a very balanced scoring team.

Yup, while this has been my knock on Hunter for a couple years now, the reality is the roster has turned over such that the overall level of talent has regressed to his level. The net result is there is no longer a question of whether he should be playing because it’s not like we have better players sitting behind him anymore.
Key stats: 36% from the floor, 24% from 3, 61% FT, and 17 turnovers.
Yes Iowa St is ranked but still, this speaks to the utter lack of significant D1 talent on this team.
Honestly, I’m not sure you can tell all that much about what kind of coach Smith is, since the athleticism, size, strength and talent couldn’t execute anyway. Unfortunate, but this just isn’t a competitive roster, period.

Ute DubParticipant
My post above: A lot of our players can only do one thing. Lovering and Auser can’t shoot from outside or won’t. Madsen and Madsen are in love with the 3. Little can shoot sometimes. We don’t get to the FT line enough.
If we’re going to suck ass, we might as well tell Lovering to shoot at minimum 15 times per game. This will open up the 3 point line for more open looks.

I get it, the talent level is lacking. Hunter had to go into this game just to be able to get the ball into the O set without a turnover. I hear a lot of get rid out Smith get rid of Harlan. We need talent. There is no other answer. Smith knows how to coach. That staff is much better than they get credit for. Can he recruit? Not so far. Recruiting hurts because there is not any type of sports atmosphere in the HC. I don’t see any way to improve without $$$.

Recruit some athletes and develop them. Height means nothing if you’re not athletic. Big 12 is athletic and physical. Hard to score against those teams. Our ski team isn’t going to cut it.

On the bright side, the only way to go from here is up.
