Hoping to get some insight from AZUte and others who may have insight:

      – Is getting Wahlin back a priority for the new staff? Does Wahlin want to be back?

      – Any updates on some of the targets that have been mentioned previously? Cam McDowell, Kelvin Odih, others.

      – Is Andre Miller going to be part of the staff? Sure seems like the likelihood is low currently.

Those are the same questions I’ve had. The G-League concluded March 29 so was hoping some good news that Andre might follow. One bit of news that dropped today is that Sharajvamts has entered the portal.

I would expect that for the most part the current players will test the portal to gain info to evaluate against the now unknown opportunity at Utah. I expect that some will likely choose to remain. But with the coaching turnover, it is like beginning the recruitment process except that other options will have a head start before the Utah coaching group is together. Hopefully updates began after Dallas exits their play-in game on the 15th.

I heard rumors that Andre Miller will likely not be part of the staff. He doesn’t want full-time hours. I’m hearing rumors about Donny Daniels’s son, who is an assistant at Utah State.

Wahlin and Dawes are priority 1 and 1A. Alex feels he can build around these two. I do believe he does want back he’s just doing his due diligence and getting his market value. I know Alex and Jake talk a lot

      – Any updates on some of the targets that have been mentioned previously? Cam McDowell, Kelvin Odih, others.

Zero and it’s a little concerning

I highly doubt Andre is part of the staff going forward. I haven’t heard the working hours issue and don’t believe that. What I do know is there are some people in Andre’s circle that have made this difficult and on top of that Andre believe it or not has been less than committal to the job. One week he wants it and the next he’s not so interested.

Things could change but at this point I believe Alex has moved on from him.

I’ve heard that Eric Daniels is the second assistant hired but for whatever reason there has been no announcement by the University but Eric was at the final four representing Utah

I’ve heard the 3rd and most likely last assistant will have extensive international recruiting ties.

The ncaa allows for as many as 5 assistant coaches but I don’t think Alex will have that many. Most likely 3 and maybe a grad assistant.

He said he prefers quality over quantity.

Do the 3 and a half. Andre could be part time during the season, working with guards.

I wouldn’t get too concerned yet about incoming transfers. We have one but there are still a lot of targets Utah is engaging with, and some of those will be coming.

I never like to use them as any frame of reference, but we will all remember that BYU didn’t hire Kevin Young last year until April 16 – and he didn’t even get to Provo until after the Suns season ended on April 28. And they were able to put together a pretty solid team after that.

True, Utah’s situation is not 100% comparable to BYU’s, but it’s comparable enough to show that Jensen can still fill up on scorers, defenders and role players available in the portal and overseas and mold a good team out of them.

Most of the players we know that Utah has been engaging with still haven’t committed anywhere. So we still have time folks.

As for Andre Miller, I have also heard that at least one person in Miller’s orbit is being difficult. But I have no way to confirm that. I hope we can still land him, because he would be a very very valuable asset for our recruiting.

          Regarding “being difficult”…

I’ll be honest, I’m not even sure what this means. Like, an agent being stubborn? A family member not wanting Andre to make that change?

Can any more light than this be shed?

It’s Andre’s agent. He botched this negotiation to hell and back. He has overplayed his hand not negotiated in good faith and Andre has just sort of sat back and let him do it.

It’s rubbed some people at Utah the wrong way for obvious reasons it’s also shown Andre may not have wanted the job as bad as people thought he did.

Yep this aligns perfectly with what I’ve heard.

Miller’s agent, although I don’t even know who he is.

Which is a bit baffling. If Andre wants to be a part of Utah basketball- which he was reported to want as recently as last year when Smith was still coach – I find it strange that he’s letting his agent screw that up for him.

Agents rarely behave in a manner that’s not in line with what their client wants, so what I take from all this is that Andre very well may want to join Jensen”s staff, but perhaps hes being unrealistic on salary expectations.

However, it also must be said that if Utah donors have been waiting for this staff to increase their investments, as has been rumored, you’d certainly think they would pony up a couple more hundred thousand to get Miller what he wants. I’m sure he’s not expecting $3M per year to be an assistant.

Also part of the equation could be that Miller may be lukewarm on the idea of being an assistant coach when he’s a head coach in the G League.

Yes it means someone close to Andre being stubborn with the financial terms.

Odih is visiting on the 15th. Other than that it has been kind of quiet with recruiting and the portal

Three other targets I really like right now are:

        Kaylon Mason
        Naas Cunningham
        Will McClendon

Plus I’m sure there are a number of players we don’t know about.

We were able to snag Terrence Brown Jr pretty damn fast, so that indicates at least some talent in selling the opportunities Utah can offer.
