ParticipantBird Ficklin was the very impressive with his throws and running ability. He has good size for a QB, taller than Dampier and Wilson.
Hope they can hold on to Ficklin as he might be the best QB the Utes have in the QB room.

ParticipantHolding onto Ficklin may ultimately mean moving on from Isaac Wilson and we haven’t let go, yet. Dead heat, co-QB2 will only work for so long and whoever ultimately is made QB3 will probably transfer. You can argue that staying patient for a first and possible redshirt year might appease Ficklin to accept QB3, but Ficklin has already sized up Isaac and believes he is better. Combine this with what Ficklin may be hearing about last year’s rumored QB drama, partly involving Isaac, and Ficklin will not be patient for long.
Personally, I’d like to see the coaches make this decision sooner rather than later. We know the benefits and risks involved. Delaying this, even to keep kids from hitting the portal, has bitten us multiple times. Make a decision as soon as you know who the better QB is and get that guy your endorsement and reps.

ParticipantIt’s really quite simple, especially in the Wild West era of the transfer portal and NIL. You don’t redshirt your best backup unless they happen to have not played in 4 regular season games. If Ficklin is even only 1% better than Isaac, you make him backup. I guess maybe you could argue that you should make him 3rd string and the scout team QB, in order to hide his talent and let him get extra reps in practice.

ParticipantPlus, can you imagine Bird doing the dirty bird after a touchdown? We must hold onto this kid.
