Did we just watch the last 22 Forever Game last Saturday? With players transferring and players getting contacted about NIL opportunities at other schools. I’m hoping we still have the game because it gets me excited for the next season. But I get why they would cancel it too.

I think the answer to that is without a doubt. Given the current environment, there’s zero benefit to conducting games of this ilk. That’s the reason why so many programs have stopped doing them. All you’re doing is exposing yourself to last-minute defections by key players on your team. At the end of the day, all it is, is a watered-down scrimmage put on for the fans.

I doubt the game is the reason these players are transferring. It just so happens to align with the spring portal.

Take Snowden. He had one foot out the door last winter but stayed. Regardless, what I heard back then was that BYU would come after him hard in the spring and that there was a very good chance he’d bite by then.

And he probably will. Snowden was the one I was least convinced would remain with Utah after spring.

Are teams forced to do their spring games before the transfer window closes? I don’t get why you wouldn’t just schedule it for the week after the portal closes

Rick, at this point, I think the timing is irrelevant. As college sports become more professionalized and almost identical to NFL franchises, down to having GMs, etc…anything that in the current environment provides potential personnel intel to opponents will be eliminated. Can you imagine if the NFL were run like college football is run today, with year-round free agency and giving opposing scouts the ability to attend events like the 22 Forever Game?

I wish they could govern college sports somehow. With it becoming more professionalized it would be nice to see some sort of contract. A 2-4 year contract and if they want to transfer then there should be a buyout option if they want to be let go of their contract. I miss the old days of all the different sports.
