I was rewatching some games from the season. Corey Butler Byrd was our only skill position player aside from Joe Williams who really had playmaking ability. Siaosi Wilson came on late, but he’s more of a type who will make plays when left open or the defense doesn’t do its job very well. Our offense was complete garbage when CBB and/or Joe Williams weren’t playing.
Of the current skill position players, these are somewhat promising to me:
Siaosi Wilson….and that’s it.
McCormick is too small and injury prone, looks great in non-conference play but has never done anything against PAC 12 opponents.
Alec Dana – I know nothing about but seems like he would have been called upon last year had he really had potential.
Zack Moss – really faded once PAC 12 season started, the Cal game was enough for me, I’ve seen enough.
Raelon Singleton – should be a decent possession receiver, does not have speed or athleticism to catch the ball in stride and keep running.
Kenric Young and Kyle Fulks should have went to a school with a track team.
Help me out, I’m looking at the Spring 2017 roster and I just don’t see it. QB position is a big problem too, I wish we’d have the balls to move Chase Hansen back to QB.
Is there anyone coming in the Fall that will give me more hope?

RB: It will be interesting to see how Armand Shyne bounces back after his injury. I feel confident with him and Moss at the RB position. Yes, Moss had a pretty sizable mental mistake in the Cal game on the final play, but he was a true freshman. I think he’ll mature mentally and physically and be a good back for us. I also expect Devonta’e Henry-Cole to get some carries this year.
WR: Siaosi Wilson made some big plays, but I agree with you that he’s still largely unproven and inconsistent. Fulk has rocks for hands, so I also agree there. I look for Demari Simpkins to have a promising year, he didn’t get much playtime as a true freshman last year, but I know the coaching staff was high on him. It sounds like they’re moving McCormick to a slot receiver role, which I think he could excel at given his skill set, and because he won’t be getting pummeled like he was at RB, maybe he can stay healthy.
TE: Having Fakailoatonga back (he was lost in preseason last year) will be a nice gain. He was our #1 TE going into the season, but we never got to see him. I’ve also heard that Hekking is capable of making plays.
QB has been discussed at length on the board already, but I’m not ready to rule anyone out just yet. It will be really interesting to see if Bateman makes a solid push for QB1 come fall camp.
The one thing I really disagree with you on is the idea of moving Chase Hansen back to QB. Dude is straight balling at safety, and that experience in our secondary is going to be necessary this year.

Runningbacks never come back to 100% the first year back after a blown ACL, I feel we’re foolish if we’re counting on Shyne to start. Moss is already injured again two practices into Spring ball. Regardless, turf toe and shin splints do not impede a running back from knowing which play is called and hitting the correct hole. Moss made those mistakes several times, it wasn’t just the end of the Cal game. He lost the Oregon game too with a bonehead mistake. And he had the gall to make a big scene when Joe Williams returned and took his job, the kid has mental issues. Unless the runningback coming here in the Fall is a stud, the runningback position looks pretty bad.
I’m not sure what you’re seeing in Demari Simpkins, he had more drops than catches.
Safeties are a dime a dozen, QBs are not. Chase Hansen is by far the most complete QB we have on our roster, it’s ridiculous he’s playing on defense.

What scene did Moss start?
All of those mistakes listed can be attributed to being a Freshman.
Safetys like Hansen are not dimes a dozen, and he really isn’t that good of a QB.

He openly complained about lack of playing time once Joe Williams was back and running for 200 yard games. The fact that he still thought he was a great runningback despite his failures to gain easy short yardage with the game on the line tells me he’s uncoachable. Really, how do you complain about lack of playing time after the Cal debacle??!

Do you have any citation to this complaining? Because I followed that story pretty close and never saw one moss complaint.

Moss had a vague tweet last year. Not a big deal at all. He looks great this spring.

1st – Chase Hansen is probably our 5th best QB. He ain’t moving to QB. Bateman is miles better than Hansen could ever dream of being and Bateman might be our third best QB. I’d bet either Bateman or Huntley plays QB this fall. Go back and watch Huntley against Indiana. He did a good job. He is lightning quick. One ESPN announcer compared him to Deshaun Watson.
2nd – Butler-Byrd. We have playmakers. McCormick is a WR. Simpkins is good. Vicks is good. Hampton has looked really good so far. We will be fine there.
3rd – Don’t forget that Moss played last year with two broken shins and turf toe. He has looked like a beast this spring. We will be fine at RB. Between Shyne, Moss and Henry Cole, we are set there. Oh, and Green is coming in.
4th – Taylor has said he wants a TE on the field on every play. He puts the TE in the TE spot or in the backfield as a FB/Wing Back. With Fakailoatonga, Handley, Hekking, etc. We are set there.
Our offense is fine. It isn’t Oregon or USC, but it is more than good enough to win the PAC-12 IF we can get better QB play AND our OL comes together.
Kenric Young probably transfers soon. So don’t worry about him. Fulks can’t catch worth a damn. BUT, Taylor runs tons of fly sweeps, so he will get the ball in his hands one way or another.
Finally, one WR who looked really good when I saw them was Nacua. I think he might surprise come this fall.

I’d bet that either Troy Williams or Bateman is our starting QB BUT Huntley comes in and plays a lot, like the bowl game last year. Huntley brings something different to the team when he is on the field.
I wouldn’t be shocked if Utah runs the QB’s similar to how Urban did it at Florida with Leak and Tebow.

Bryan Thompson looks like a receiver with real potential.
