In my pre-season predictions I picked BYU over LSU. With how things have played out over the last couple of weeks I am even more convinced that BYU will beat LSU. This isn’t to say that BYU is some world beater destined for the CFP, BYU just seems to catch teams like this at the right time. Texas, Oklahoma, UCLA, Michigan State, Mississipi State, etc., etc. They catch these teams when they have a new coach or when the current coach is on the hot seat or after they have lost a ton of talent, or any other reason that makes the other team ripe for an upset.
In this LSU game, they are taking on a team that is dealing with all of the following:
New HC – Yes, Orgeron took over halfway through last year, but that was with Miles’ staff and schemes. He now has his own staff and schemes.
New OC and scheme – First game under a new OC with a new scheme.
Lost a ton of talent to the NFL – The Tigers had as many players drafted as Utah.
Lost several starters/contributors to transfer – With Orgeron taking over, several players who were expected to start or contribute this year transferred out of the program.
Loss of their best defender to injury – Key is likely out while recovering from an injury.
Loss of several more players to suspension – An unknown number of players are suspended from this game, but rumors have the number at 7. Certainly at least a couple of those players would have played in this game.
LSU overlooking BYU – Due to that awful performance against PSU last week, LSU is likely overlooking BYU. On top of that, BYU already has their first game under the belts and has had a week to work on their deficiencies.
About the only thing not working in BYU’s favor in this game is that the game was moved to New Orleans instead of Provo or somewhere else out West.
I hope I’m wrong, but think I will be proven right. If they do win, I suppose it will help prevent our guys from taking them too lightly and we will likely be playing a top 25 team in week 2.

I think they lose in spectacular fashion, a la against Michigan in 2015. They just don’t have the offensive playmakers this year to compete with a team like LSU.
Watch for them to fail to establish the run, become very one dimensional and LSU to ground and pound them all game long.
35-10 LSU.

You make some good points. As much as I can’t stand the SEC, zoob fans would be insufferable if they won. I do expect a close game (17-13 for LSU). This is the game that exposes BYU’s offense as truly poor. The D will do their best and LSU’s O will be mediocre. Bad RB’s and receivers, an average O line, and an overrated QB will start the annual BYU fan calling for the head of their OC. In this case it will be their deified Heisman trophy winner Ty Detmer.
That said, a twisted part of me wants them to win. It will make the beat down we give them next week a lot more satisfying.

Zoob fans are insufferable, period.

So Oregon State put up 35 on Portland State, nearly double TDS output. So I’ll say TDS puts up 10 to 16 points on the LSU Tigers. I think the Tigers can get 25-35 points on the board against a decent TDS defense. Sorry, TDS, no chance.

You have as much chance of being right about LSU vs terribles down South as I do of scoring a date with Kate Upton, Cindy Crawford or Christie Brinkley
there is no way in hell LSU is looking past them. They get exposed tonight.
Mangum will throw his jump balls because he can’t help himself. He doesn’t have the WR’e to catch them this year. They lost too much production with Hill and Williams leaving.
Yeah LSU is starting g some young guys Their young guys could ALL start at byu P
you are giving them way more credit than they’ve earned thus far

I think they lose based on speed. BYU has slow corners and a slower receiving corps.

I think LSU wins a close one, but things are setting up very well for BYU. LSU may be a top 15-10 team come end of season, but they are dealing with a ton of turnover and on top of that have a bunch of expected starters and contributors out for this game. Unless LSU gets a pick 6 or some big special teams plays, I think this ends up being close. At the end of the day I don’t think BYU will be able to score more than 10-13 points, so LSU wins a low scoring game. This does seem to be setting up well for them to be knocked off though.

Tatum Mango will get exposed. Strong D Line will pressure him and his WRs will fail to get open against LSU’s secondary.
There’s a reason LSU is called DBU
